Standing together for Justice
|
|---|
Greetings!
It has been an emotional roller coaster the past couple of weeks. Seeing the President of the United States stand up and speak out on behalf of marriage equality was inspiring, then to see our local legislative process be managed in such an unfair way around Colorado Civil Unions was disheartening. I know many of you watched with me as the hard work of so many volunteers and the leadership of One Colorado was summarily blocked in a shocking fashion.
Closer to home, I shared with you about the proposed cuts in BVSD that disproportionately target Title 1 schools and underserved students in our community. I hope you will join me in asking BVSD to work to balance the budget in a way that minimizes the impact on our neediest students and keeps equity as a priority, not just in the tagline, but in its actions as well.
This coming Sunday at our Garden Party we will honor Clela Rorex who stood as an ally to the LGBTQ community when it was a huge risk to do so. And as an organization, Out Boulder will continue her legacy and stand as allies to other communities as part of our commitment to social justice for all people.
Consider signing this petition to ask the leadership to keep equity as a priority or write to the School Board and the Superintendent and ask why they are cutting essential service to students. There is also a community forum tonight from (May 16) 6:30-8:30 pm at the Board Room/Education Center, 6500 East Arapahoe.
I look forward to seeing you at the Garden Party and thank you for your support.
In solidarity,
Aicila

Out Boulder's Spring tradition is right around the corner, have you RSVP'd yet? Click here to do so and get all the final details. A delightful afternoon spent in the company of friends and loved ones, the Garden Party is a perfect start to the spring-summer backyard gathering season of 2012. Come and join us and help celebrate the 2012 Big Hearts award winner, Frank O'Cana. Frank is a long-time activist in Boulder County and has made a difference in the lives of many, many people with his work for Boulder County AIDS Project. Also, this year we will be presenting the First Annual, Clela Rorex Allies in Action Award to Clela Rorex! Clela Rorex, the Boulder City Clerk who issued the first same-sex marriage licenses in North America in 1975 right here in Boulder County. Clela also promised to share with stories of her experience. The Garden Party is also a great opportunity to make that donation you've been thinking about making to support Out Boulder and our work to promote equality for the LGBTQ people of Boulder County. Donations made at the Garden Party, up to $2000 dollars will be matched, and if this is your first time making a tax deductible gift to Out Boulder an additional matching gift by the Gill Foundation could, in essence, make your donation TRIPLE!! Let's have a great time, see you there. YES?! May 20th from 2:00 to 6:00 PM |
