COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: Sharing the Passion, One Two-Step at a Time
|
|---|
You going to this month's Dancin' Divas event on Friday, April 13? You should. Dancin' Divas is a not-for-profit, community dance group in Boulder that has been providing social dancing, country two-stepping, and line dancing to the lesbian community since 2004. With nearly 75 women attending each dance, which happens on the second Friday of every month, Dancin' Divas draws women from Denver, Greeley, Colorado Springs, and even other states. This month, with a live performance by the ever-popular Giddy-Up Kitty bluegrass band, who knows from how far the fans will come! Dancin' Divas has become an institution in Boulder County-but it didn't just happen. This kind of ongoing successful event (think PropGay or Pridefest or Girls Heart Girls) results from the inspiration and effort of people in our community (like you!) who bring their ideas to life. Dancin' Divas was started by a handful of women who had a passion for dancing and who wanted to share their passion with others in the LGBT community. Divas wanted to provide a smoke-free, alcohol-free venue where it was safe for lesbians and gays to learn and enjoy social dance.
So who are the divas who started it all? Some of them are folks you probably know: Hope Meyer, Susie Pringle, Barbara League, and Sharon Jamison. (OK, lucky me. I know all of them.) These gals came together because of their passion for dance, but their vision worked because each provided a different talent to make the venture succeed. Read More... |

Please join us as part of the Lafayette Cesar Chavez Celebration to watch the movie La Mission, followed by a discussion at the Lafayette Library.
Growing up in the Mission district of San Francisco, Che Rivera (Benjamin Bratt) has always had to be tough to survive. He's a powerful man respected throughout the Mission barrio for his masculinity and his strength, as well as for his hobby building beautiful lowrider cars. A reformed inmate and recovering alcoholic, Che has worked hard to redeem his life and do right by his pride and joy: his only son, Jes, whom he has raised on his own after the death of his wife. Che's path to redemption is tested, however, when he discovers Jes is gay. To survive his neighborhood, Che has always lived with his fists. To survive as a complete man, he'll have to embrace a side of himself he's never shown. More info.
