COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT:  HospiceCare's New LGBT Grief Support Group

Hospice

Supporting Each Other: Addressing LGBT Grief in the Community

"My grief is no less, because you think it should be."

HospiceCare of Boulder and Broomfield Counties and Out Boulder are sponsoring an eight week grief support workshop for anyone in the LGBT community who has lost a partner, child, friend, or other loved one through death. The group is designed to offer a safe place to process grief in an LGBT friendly environment.

The two facilitators, Phyllis Kline and Susan Palmquist, are both HospiceCare chaplains and members of the LGBT community. In their view, there is a great need for a grief support group of this kind. According to Susan, "Even with the incredible strides that have been made in society towards accepting us, there is still a lot of stigma and prejudice out there. This results in 'layers of stigma'-being gay-our relationships not being honored, and then another layer is added because grief is something that people don't want to deal with in general."

This support group will help grieving members of the LGBT community avoid self-isolation and allow them to explore and express their grief by connecting with others who understand their experience. "We're fortunate to live and work in a community where such a collaboration is possible and entirely supported by our organization," Phyllis stated.

Meetings are Wednesdays, March 28th to May 16th, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at HospiceCare's Boulder conference room. The group is limited to 10 people who are a minimum of three months past a death loss. Registration is required, call Aicila Lewis, Out Boulder (303-499-5777) or HospiceCare Grief Services (303-604-5300) to sign up.

And also, please join Out Boulder for a Social Gathering with HospiceCare on March 7, 5-7pm at Shine restaurant.
