Celebrating with First United Methodist Church

In 1997, Boulder's First United Methodist Church, (FUMC), a courageous faith community
dedicated to diversity, inclusiveness, social justice, spiritual nourishment and healthy communities became an LGBTQA welcoming and affirming congregation.

We at Out Boulder, are honored to join them in celebrating the anniversary of this joyous occasion.  Moves like the one on the part of the congregation and leadership of FUMC are effective and positive ones on our journey to equality, respect and well-being for the people of Boulder County and beyond.

To mark this occasion, Out Boulder will be presenting  a gift to the FUMC congregation during the morning service on Sunday, March 4th, as a  token of our appreciation for the support that FUMC consistently provides to Out Boulder, and LGBTQ people in Boulder and world wide with the stance they have chosen to make.

We invite you to come and be with us on this occasion and celebrate with us a truly special occasion.

In solidarity,

Mauricio Shoup,  Program Director
COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT:  Open Door Fund

Open Door Fund LGBT Boulder

The Open Door Fund (ODF) has been supporting Boulder County's LGBT community since 1996, funding numerous programs that serve our needs and interests. In 2011 alone, ten non-profit organizations, including Out Boulder, shared $40,000 in distributions from ODF. The recipients were themselves diverse; ODF grants promoted the arts, healthcare, services for LGBT homeless and youth, and other projects throughout the county. The fund is dedicated to raising money and providing financial assistance for LGBT programs and is a permanent endowment of the Community Foundation of Boulder County.

On April 28, 2012, ODF will host its annual fundraising dinner at the St Julien Hotel. We are thrilled to have as this year's guest speaker, Eliza ODF LGBT BoulderEliza Byard, executive director of GLSEN (Gay Lesbian and Straight Education Network).Byard is one of the most visibleand outspoken leaders in the LGBT civil rightsmovement. She recently appeared on AC360 with Anderson Cooper, advocating for legislation to create safer schools and also has spoken on The O'Reilly Factor on Fox News and 60 Minutes. Her blog is often featured onthe Huffington Post. Byard will speak about the historic victories of the pastand how they have shaped the current undertakings of the LGBT movement. She is one of the most respected and effective voices for change in progressivesocial politics today and the Open Door Fund is honored to have her appear atthis year's dinner.

Please follow the link to register for the annual dinner.

Boulder LGBT Community -- It's Time to Tell Your Story!

Photo Share LGBT BoulderWe are starting an exciting Photo Story-sharing project with Out Boulder. We are looking to get a diverse range of experiences to create an inclusive story of the LGBTQ community of Boulder. We are looking for individuals (like you) that would like to participate in this project.

Shannon will be collecting stories from Now until the middle of April and she will be asking to set up two separate meeting times, about 60-90 minutes each. The first meeting we will have a recorded conversation/interview. The second meeting will be a photo shoot at least one to two weeks later. These will be environmental portraits-- the photos will incorporate a passion or a significant aspect of your life (for example: rock climber, artist, activist, dancer, or daily household activities, etc).

In the end these photos and stories will be shared through a photo exhibition and in a book. As a participant, you will have complete veto power over your photos and stories that will be shared in these outlets.

If you are interested in more info or in participating please contact: Shannon at OutBoulderPhoto@gmail.com , 303.819.2817.

Marriage Referenda Stress LGBT People, Divide Families, Damage Communities, and Waste Money

Read the full article at thinkprogress.org

As marriage equality legislation advances in New Jersey, Washington, and Maryland, many conservative groups, such as the National Organization for Marriage and Family Policy Institute of Washington, are discussing the possibility of taking the issue to the ballot. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) even called a referendum "the bargain of your life," suggesting there are no consequences to such an approach. But Glenda Russell, a psychologist at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has published significant research on the negative impacts of LGBT-related ballot initiatives through the Institute for Gay and Lesbian Strategic Studies (which merged to become part of the Williams Institute).
