Youth Film Project Premiere at Queer Realities - Feb. 24
|
|---|
Back in 2007, I heard that Out Boulder (then Boulder Pride) was holding a filmmaking project for LGBTQ youth. I excitedly (and probably a little annoyingly) called up the office to get involved in this one-of-a-kind project. Four years later, here I am sharing my passion and skills with some amazing youth for the fifth time!
Media is an integral part of our lives and the act of sharing ones own story in community is an incredible experience. That being said, Mark your calendars! On Friday, February 24th Out Boulder's BOLD Youth Program, in partnership with Bent Lens Cinema's Queer Realities, proudly premieres the youth films created during BOLD's Fall 2011 Film Project!
This special evening will be held at the Nomad Theater (1410 Quince Ave); the youth portion of the evening is from 5:15-7 and is FREE! All the films are written, directed, and produced by youth from all over Boulder County.
The films range from serious to funny, from documentaries to fantasy role-play gamer style! Meant to inspire and empower youth through the potent form of digital media, this project is a highly unique o pportunity for youth to tell their own stories themselves. Please join us in community to support LGBTQ and Allied Youth! And for more information on the entire Queer Realities weekend, check out the spotlight below.
In Solidarity,
B. Mann, BOLD Youth Program Coordinator

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: Queer Realities - Feb. 24-25
|
|---|
Let great queer film provide a refuge for the cold weather. Bent Lens Cinema invites you to Queer Realities 2012, Feb 24 and 25 at the Nomad Theater. Friday night celebrates Out Boulder's BOLD youth filmmakers in a free program starting at 5:15 PM. Stay after for "Romeos" at 7:30 PM is "a provactive, powerful portrait of change" about a young trans man, his closeted gay love, and the unrequited affection of a young woman. End the evening noshing on goodies and visiting with friends at the Bent Salon.

Saturday brings a positive and heartwarming documentary lineup starting with the lovely film "I Am" at 3:00 PM about a filmmaker returning home after her mother's death and documenting the extraordinary story of the 2009 victory ending criminal prohibitions in India. "Legalize Gay" at 5:00 PM captures the courage and conviction of a new generation of activists -- gay and straight -- as they campaign for LGBT equality. "Legalize Gay" is followed by Bent Lens cinematographer Kyle Inselman's short "On the Road to Equality" and a student panel discussing local activism. Then take a break for a delicious Bent Salon before diving into the 7:30 PM Colorado premiere showing of "Vito" preceded by a preview of the upcoming film "HIV is Not a Crime". "Vito" captures the indefatigable energy of activist Vito Russo from the period after Stonewall where he found his voice as a gay activist and critic of LGBT representation in the media. Wrap up the series with a light and sweet Salon following the movie.
Save by buying a full program ticket for $25 or all-day Saturday ticket for $20 ($3 discount for students and seniors). Full program details at

SPEAKING OUT TRAINING DATE! - Mar. 18
|
|---|
With all the votes counted, and accounting for some scheduling issues, we have now selected our training date, Sunday, March 18th, from 10 AM to 3:00 PM, location TBD. There will be another date coming up so don't worry if you can't make this one. We want this bureau to have the widest range of rich stories to share with our community and this means we want you!
Many questions have come up as to why this training is mandatory and even necessary simply put, to honor the power of this program we need to meet you.
Some of the reasons why are below, check these out and you will see that it is important to get together. We understand that this process may reduce our outings this semester but after you read the reasoning behind this we hope you'll agree, it's time to get together.
- We have a data base that on occasion has no information on who you are other than your email address.
- We have received some feedback about our program, it is well loved, appreciated and wanted, however there have been some discrepancies in how LGBTQI and A are defined to our audiences creating some confusion.
- At times, our stories have not been appropriate for our audience age and context, and at times may have placed our access to younger audiences in jeopardy.
- It's always good to have refresher and an opportunity to re-connect or connect for the first time with others in the bureau. This way you are not meeting everyone for the first time when you show up to an engagement, and this translates into a more cohesive and impact-full panel
We hope to see you at this training, please RSVP at your earliest convenience to Mauricio by clicking here.
If you have any questions or concerns, do please also email those to Mauricio by clicking on the RSVP link above.

Love Free or Die: How the Bishop of New Hampshire is Saving the World: Feb. 17
|
|---|
"This is the time. Right now. This year, 2012." Macky Alston, Director
Direct to Boulder International Film Festival from the Sundance Film Festival, "Love Free or Die" will have its Colorado Premiere on February 17 at 2:45pm at First United Methodist Church. The event is co-sponsored by Out Boulder and Bent Lens Cinema. This film features the consecration of Gene Robinson, the first openly gay Bishop in Christendom. His historic elevation by the Episcopal Church in America caused great controversy worldwide, along with a stream of death threats. But Gene Robinson refuses to leave the Church - or the man he loves. By the end of the film, because of Gene's faith and leadership, the Church has done a 180-degree turn; more gay bishops are being considered, more same-sex marriages are being blessed and, in 2010, history was made when Gene's conservative home state of New Hampshire legalized same-sex marriage. Gene proves that you don't have to leave behind your Christianity, or your civil rights, just to love and be loved.

Out Boulder Health and Wellness Presents: Rasa Yoga - Starting Sat., March 3
|
|---|

Join Out Boulder's Health and Wellness Program for our new weekly Yoga class! On Saturdays, starting March 3, 1:30-3:00 pm with our instructor Ketul Arnold will lead RASA YOGA at Intercambio, 4735 Walnut Street. This class is open to all levels by donation. Bring your mat, towel, and water for a practice of health for body, mind, spirit, and any thing else that needs to come with you.
RASA YOGA is a gentle and do-able practice. Rasa is grounded in the foundation of traditional Hatha Yoga and Rasa itself is one of the most beautiful words in Sanskrit. Rasa is the name given to taste, the 6 taste centers of the tongue. These taste centers inform the endocrine systems' job descriptions in the body. Rasa also signifies sound, most of all the sound of the human voice and will we use our voices whole-heartedly. NOW, Rasa is first tissue of the human body. We can call it blood plasma, however, Rasa is the essential nature of JOY. All other bodily tissues and functions depend upon the reclamation of joy. This is truth, and yoga is the process of demanding truth. RASA YOGA, in it's simplicity, is a practice of self-care and self-love. Since 1990, RASA has given courage and fearlessness to many hundreds of seekers. Offered in both the USA and EUROPE, RASA allows a condition of deep relaxation. In ayurvedic medicine, relaxation is the required base for yoga (which is healing) to take place. More info.
