This week we want to re-introduce you to Speaking Out!

Speaking Out, Out Boulder's Speaker Bureau is an essential component for the cultivation of equality, respect, and well-being in Boulder County.   Speaking Out aims to introduce the faces and experiences of Boulder's LGBTQ and Allied community to the greater community at large by sharing personal stories and answering questions in order to dispel myths, eliminate fear, and ultimately take steps toward creating a truly nurturing and inclusive community. Speaking Out bureau members are visible and real role models for individuals of all ages that may be engaged in a process of personal inquiry and development around their own Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and for those wanting to be allies in this journey to equality. Needless to say, the importance of this program and the impact that the each and every speaker has on our audiences is such that it is simply unquantifiable.

It is this level of importance, and an honest evaluation of the program itself that has prompted us to make the development of Speaking Out, and the Speaking Out volunteers a top priority for 2012. In order to better meet the needs of those seeking to bring Speaking Out to their schools, businesses and government offices we will have a required training for all past, current and new members of the bureau.

Please mark your calendars and save the date Saturday, February 4th from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM and RSVP to  speakingout@outboulder.org

We look forward to seeing you then, we will have snacks and we guarantee you will learn something new about you and the impact that you can create in our community just by Speaking Out.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT:  SPAN:
Chocolate Lover's Fling

SPAN

Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence (SPAN) is a human rights organization which provides emergency shelter, counseling, community education, legal advocacy and transitional services to adults and children who are fleeing violent relationships in Boulder and Broomfield Counties. Since opening our doors in 1979, our vision has expanded beyond the sole treatment of domestic violence to include a much broader social agenda, recognizing that to end domestic violence we must also work to end other forms of injustice and oppression that affect our client's lives including race, class, sexual orientation, gender identity, and more.

SPAN Chocolate Lover's Fling Boulder

SPAN relies on the generous financial contributions of our community to provide services and support for survivors of intimate partner violence. The Chocolate Lovers' Fling is our most important fundraising event of the year, with a goal of raising funds to support services that are changing lives, even saving lives! The Chocolate Lovers' Fling will be held Saturday, February 11, 2012, at the UCAR Event Center in Boulder. We are planning a great event this year including pairings of wine & beer with different varieties of chocolate, live music, silent & live auction, and more!  To purchase tickets visit www.active.com.  To donate items for the auctions or to ask questions about the event, contact Chelsea at  chelsea@safehousealliance.org or 303-449-8623.

January 25 is National Gay-Straight Alliance Day

GSA
Check out the video for Gay-Straight Alliance Day. Thousands of Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs) and LGBT groups have been forming in high schools and colleges across America to stop bullying, homophobia, transphobia and hate. These student organizations dare to create dialogue to improve lives. It is brave work and deserves to be recognized and celebrated. That is why TODAY we are celebrating the first-ever National Gay-Straight Alliance Day!

One of the main goals of National GSA Day is to connect those who want to start a GSA or LGBT group with local, state, or national organizations that can help. If your organization is interested in becoming involved in such collaborations, please contact dana@iowapridenetwork.org.
