Out Boulder is Supported By YOU!
|
|---|
Dear ,
In just this past month, Out Boulder events and activities touched the lives of over 1,000 people. Our community partnerships are with a broad and diverse group of organizations, as well as individuals like you! With the support of our many donors and volunteers, we will achieve our vision of equality. Which is why I am writing today to ask you to consider a pledge to Out Boulder. Or come celebrate our 5th Annual Wine Tasting on November 19. This delightful community event and fundraiser is a great way to meet other people in community and support the work of Out Boulder.
Out Boulder was recently invited to join Giving First. 100% of donations through Giving First come directly to us to benefit the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and allied community of Boulder County.
In Solidarity,
Aicila Lewis Executive Director

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: Volunteer Extraordinaire, Carol
|
|---|
This week, Out Boulder is honored to shine our Community Spotlight on the incredible Carol Kobel. You may not recognize her, but, if you have been to the PrideHouse lately, or if you wondered how Central Park in Boulder "got" clean after Boulder Pride this past summer, then you know her work. Carol is single handedly responsible for the facilities maintenance of our Office and Community Center. Stop by just about every Wednesday and you too, can learn the "business end of a broom" with our resident volunteer dynamo. Carol takes "giving back" literally; she generously donates her time, her presence, and her money, to cultivating equality, respect and well-being around the world. Carol's commitment to compassion and engaged activism is one we can all learn from. She is one of a group of citizens responsible for bringing HOPE to the homeless people of Longmont. HOPE, Homeless Outreach Providing Encouragement is a locally run, public benefit organization that provides "after-hours street outreach, distributing life-sustaining support to the homeless community along with programs to encourage movement toward self-sufficiency". Another way Carol embodies the importance of being a contributor to positive change is through her international volunteer work. From war time Ethiopia and Eritrea to a yearly jaunt to Nicaragua with a medical team, Carol is being the change. In Nicaragua, Carol helps people see with comfort by properly fitting them with donated prescription glasses that, wait for it...Carol procured. In Boulder, Carol wrestles with the demons that sometimes build up under our couches or in our tiny bathroom. Carol is one of the reasons why we at Out Boulder believe that a community where people of all sexual orientations and gender Identities can live in equality along our heterosexual allies is a viable option. Yes, there is no denying it we are grateful for Carol, we love her, and we think you should too.

Bent Lens Cinema Presents Two Films at the Dairy During Trans Awareness Week - November 19
|
|---|
Tomboy @ 6:30 p.m. -- Award winner at the Berlin Film Festival, Odessa International Film Festival, SF Frameline GLBT Film Festival and many others.
When 10 year old Mikael (beautifully played by Zoé Héran) moves to a new neighborhood with his younger sister and parents, he's shy about getting to know the new kids before school starts in the fall. Over the course of the summer he befriends and plays with the local children. One girl, Lisa (Jeanne Disson), likes him. Eventually, Lisa comes to Mikael's house and meets his younger sister, Jeanne...who plays along with some game she's not sure of: Mikael is the sister she knows as Laure. Eventually, Mikael's effort to live as himself is foiled when his mother finds out and she insists he reveal himself before school starts. Despite the agony that transpires, the children overcome their surpise; even Lisa still wants to know Laure and be his friend.
Strella @ 8:30 p.m. -- Winner of best actress and art direction awards at the first Hellenic Film Academy awards ceremony.
Greek director, Panos Koutras, opened (and stunned) the 2009 Berlin International Film Festival with his tender and provocative portrayal of a man and woman who meet in an Athens hotel and fall in love. Yiorgos (Yiannis Kokiasmenos) has recently been released from prison, and we soon learn Strella (Mina Orfanou) is a trans woman and performer with a rich circle of friends. Their love story develops against the back drop of Yiorgos' search for his son whom he hasn't seen for over 10 years, as it takes him back to his village and throughout Athens; while we follow Strella in her very queer life in Athens. Then strap on your seat belts, Koutras takes a sharp turn in the plot that adds an extraordinary edge to their love. He also offers some of the most beautiful intimate scenes involving a trans person ever on the big screen.

We are hosting a local forum to get feedback from residents of Boulder. If it doesn't work for us, it won't work. Come raise your voice and ensure this new marketplace works!

When: Wed, November 16th at 6pm.
