Trans Awareness Week will Feature Art Contest and a Slew of Events to Fill the Week - November 13-20

As coordinator of the second annual Trans Awareness Week (TAW), I have been working with a dedicated committee of folks who are planning and contributing to the future week of events that will take place November 13-20.  I want to start by giving a hearty thank you to these people involved in the TAW planning committee: Lynnette Schweimler, Catie Miller, Jane Elvins, Hillary Montague-Asp, Marie Sutherland, Gwen Goodwin, Masha Mikulinsky, Megan Adovasio-Jones, Dan Julio, and Gus Spheeris.

I am especially excited about a new addition to TAW: The Trans Awareness Week Art Contest that was the original idea of committee member Masha Mikulinsky. The theme of the contest is "TRANSForming Art" and the deadline to submit art is Friday, November 11 at 1pm. I encourage people to contribute their work of any medium for the art exhibit that will be the result of the art contest. The art will be on display at the Pridehouse from November 13  through December 14. The works of art will be voted on by anyone attending the Trans & Ally Potluck that will kick-off Trans Awareness Week on Sunday, November 13 at 5:30 p.m.

The 13th Annual Transgender Day of Remembrance Candlelight Vigil will end the week on Sunday, November 20 in Golden at Jefferson Unitarian Church in Denver. This event is put on by the Gender Identity Center. If you are interested in taking part in car pools to this event, as a driver or rider, please contact Hillary.montague@colorado.edu.

Please check out our web site's Trans Awareness Week Page to find out more about these events and the rest of the lineup for the week that you can support and be part of.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: Prop Gay

Prop Gay

This week our community spotlight shines on a growing social institution for Boulder's LBTQ communities of the 21 and up, Proposition Gay, or as it's more dearly referred to Prop Gay!  Prop Gay was the brainchild of good times enthusiast, promoter and former Out Boulder board of directors member, Mr. Mathew Sommers.  Mat has left Boulder but fear not, Prop Gay is now the charge of Boulder's very own Mr. Camren Von Davis and a team of volunteers that don't shy away from the hard work it takes to coordinate each one of these events.

The premise for Prop Gay is simple, at 10 p.m. on the last Friday of every month Prop Gay  encourages gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender folks and their straight friends to show up at a randomly chosen bar in Boulder. Prop Gay offers a great alternative to going to Denver for a gay night out and it allows for the local LGBTQ communities to get to know each other and for a tighter knit set of friends that live locally.

For the month of October, tradition continues at the Catacombs.
Lurk about in the dark corners and rooms in your best Halloween garb... or as a muppet?
Friday, October 28th :: 10pm
Catacombs Bar // 13th and Spruce, Boulder
Jim Henson Theme! (Muppet, Sesame Street, Labyrinth, etc.)

When she was at the top of her game as a country singer-songwriter, Chely Wright risked alienating thousands of her adoring fans and even some of her family members by coming out as a lesbian. The decision came after nearly 20 years of tortured introspection and daily prayers to God to "make it go away." Wish Me Away is a wrenching chronicle of Wright's personal countdown to the day in 2010 when she resolved to go public.

Director-producers Bobbie Birleffi and Beverly Kopf zoom in on Wright as she wrestles with her decision and its implications for her career, built on sexy videos like "Single White Female"-and, of course, on the concealment of her own sexuality. Her father, sister, and Nashville colleagues also speak candidly in interviews, voicing their love and support yet fearing the repercussions of her announcement. Poignant therapeutic sessions with her minister underscore her inner struggle along with her strength and courage.

Wright's reasons for coming out were, she claims, threefold: to free herself from the burdens of living a lie, to lend support to gay children and teenagers, and to counter the belief-especially in the type of Bible Belt community in which she was brought up-that homosexuality is wrong. On May 4, 2010, Wright released both her memoir of life as a closeted lesbian, Like Me, and her first album of new songs since 2005, Lifted Off the Ground. One of the tracks on the album shares its title with this intimate documentary (which won the jury prize at the Los Angeles Film Festival earlier this year).

Sponsored by Barbara Bridges, Caz Matthews, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, One Colorado Eduction Fund.

Revolutions and Out Boulder are proud to announce "Break the Mold": a unique personal growth, artistic, and social opportunity for LGBTIQ adults

Break the MoldOut Boulder and Revolutions present: "Break the Mold" as part of our Health and Wellness program! Daily requirements of the mechanized world cut us off  from the nourishment that exists naturally within us. Out of touch with our bodies, we become out of touch with others, our work, and the world around us. Even partially disconnected, we can turn to empty or unhealthy forms of pleasure for fulfillment and wind up feeling worse. LGBTIQ people must continually cope with the additional stressors of homophobia/transphobia and internalized oppression.

This 7-week group offers a welcoming space to access untapped strengths and creativity through original movement. Participants will explore body-based patterns that are life-limiting and play with new options. It's perfect for those wishing to shake things up in a healthy, powerful way. "Break the Mold" promotes increased embodiment and conscious choice in an environment of respect, curiosity, and fun. If you suspect there is more of you to know and to share with the world, please join us in this exciting group, created especially for Colorado's LGBTIQ community!

Contact Leslie at 720-284-1197 or mccormick.leslie@gmail.com for more information and to pre-register. A limited number of scholarships are available through Out Boulder.

The workshop will take place on Wednesdays evenings, November 2nd -- December 21st, 5:45-7:00 p.m. at Boulder Circus Center, 4747 26th Street. The cost is $210.00 for 7 weeks (a couple of scholarships and sliding scale spots are available).
