A message from BOLD Youth Program Coordinator,
b mann
|
|---|
Hello Community!
As I write this on a beautiful fall morning while watching the sunrise and listening to Democracy Now! I cannot help but reflect on the importance of community and self-expression.
Two weeks ago BOLD kicked off our flagship program, the annual (or perhaps semi-annual) filmmaking project. Once again, it is so inspiring and invigorating for me to connect with the youth of our community through this project, to put the power of media directly in their hands and for them to have the opportunity to tell their own stories themselves.
Out Boulder's BOLD Program is a unique program with an intention on activism and empowerment through arts-based projects, and the filmmaking project is so close to my heart. I believe it is so important for LGBTQ and Allied youth to be able to work toward media representation on their terms by not only looking closely at our representation, but also by learning the craft and having the support of the community to hear their stories.
We will be premiering these films in January, so please come support our Youth! To find out more about all the activities in our youth program please check out the BOLD section of this website!
See you in the streets!

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: Allan Andre
|
|---|
This week we are proud to shine the community spotlight on to Allan Andre! Allan stopped by the Pride House not too long ago and asked what he could do to give back to the community. He mentioned he was a writer and before you know it Allan had created an outline for what is now our totally awesome Friday night writing group.
Allan was born in New York City and is now a student at the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University. He is a musician as well as a writer and has self-published several chapbooks and CDs of prose, music, and poetry. His writing is also forthcoming in Ashe and Not Enough Night. His main project of the last four years has been to take a portable typewriter across North America and improvise poems on street corners, including Pearl Street. To date, he has written over two thousand poems. Allan has also become a beloved guest facilitator for BOLD, Out Boulder's youth program.
If you have ever been the slightest bit curious about developing your writing or exploring poetry, join Allan and the rest of us on Friday at the Pride House, 2132 14th Street. We meet at 5:30 and go until 7:00 p.m. The group is free, donations always welcomed and ALL writers and ALL people are welcome.

Recently we received a request via a voicemail left after hours from a member of our community. This person, happens to be currently an inmante serving time at the Boulder County Jail. In the message, a gentleman's voice, shared how being an LGBTQ person in jail can add to the difficulties of the experience and as a result can be extremely isolating. He went on to share that he had no family support as his lifestyle was not one that was approved by his family. He let us know that he is in dire need of communication with others and wondered if anyone in the greater Boulder community would be willing to exchange letters with him. If you feel that you could make time in your schedule to write a letter to this member of our community, please mail it to our office or drop it by, even after hours and well make sure he receives it, your time and good faith will be greatly appreciated.

Bent Lens to Present Two Films During Trans Awareness Week at The Dairy Center
|
|---|
On Friday, November 19 you will not want to miss the double feature at the Dairy Center brought to you by Bent Lens during Trans Awareness Week.
Tomboy @ 6:30 p.m. -- Award winner at the Berlin Film Festival, Odessa International Film Festival, SF Frameline GLBT Film Festival and many others.
When 10 year old Mikael (beautifully played by Zoé Héran) moves to a new neighborhood with his younger sister and parents, he's shy about getting to know the new kids before school starts in the fall. Over the course of the summer he befriends and plays with the local children. One girl, Lisa (Jeanne Disson), likes him. Eventually, Lisa comes to Mikael's house and meets his younger sister, Jeanne...who plays along with some game she's not sure of: Mikael is the sister she knows as Laure. Eventually, Mikael's effort to live as himself is foiled when his mother finds out and she insists he reveal himself before school starts. Despite the agony that transpires, the children overcome their surpise; even Lisa still wants to know Laure and be his friend.
Strella @ 8:30 p.m. -- Winner of best actress and art direction awards at the first Hellenic Film Academy awards ceremony.
Greek director, Panos Koutras, opened (and stunned) the 2009 Berlin International Film Festival with his tender and provocative portrayal of a man and woman who meet in an Athens hotel and fall in love. Yiorgos (Yiannis Kokiasmenos) has recently been released from prison, and we soon learn Strella (Mina Orfanou) is a trans woman and performer with a rich circle of friends. Their love story develops against the back drop of Yiorgos' search for his son whom he hasn't seen for over 10 years, as it takes him back to his village and throughout Athens; while we follow Strella in her very queer life in Athens. Then strap on your seat belts, Koutras takes a sharp turn in the plot that adds an extraordinary edge to their love. He also offers some of the most beautiful intimate scenes involving a trans person ever on the big screen.
For more information check out Bent Lenz or the Dairy Center.

Take Part in a Linguistics Research Study: Males 20-30
|
|---|
Alec Buchner, a graduate student in LINGUISTICS, is conducting a research study about the sounds of spoken language. The purpose of this study is to analyze how stereotypes influence the way people produce sounds in specific environments. The researcher is seeking volunteers willing to participate in the study. If you participate in this study, you will be asked to watch a short video and describe it while being recorded and thereafter fill out a short questionnaire. Your participation would take approximately 15 minutes in a sound attenuated booth in the CU Phonetics Lab in Hellems. Right now, the researcher is looking for native speakers of American English who are male and between the ages of 20 and 30.
