A note from Out Boulder's Executive Director,

Aicila Lewis

I love fall. Growing up in New England, it was almost a magical time. The countryside would bloom with color that rivaled spring-time flowering. And you could get fresh apple cider and maple syrup at small road side stands that appeared from nowhere.  While spring is traditionally the season of new beginnings, something about fall is always very full of hope for me. Working with the Out Boulder team and seeing all of the wonderful things that are happening, including the National Coming Out week and the Transgender Health Symposium, is inspiring.

This Friday marks the 12th annual Celebrate Bisexual Awareness Day. Started in 1999, the day has grown from a small observance to a worldwide experience. In Boulder, CU will be hosting an Alice in Wonderland inspired Mad Tea-Party. A recent study published by the New York Times acknowledged that bisexual men do indeed exist and a study published earlier this year by the San Francisco Human Relations Commission highlighted the impact of Bi Invisibility.

So if you can, stop by the CU celebration, or the Out Boulder Hapa Happy Hour tonight, and celebrate the many manifestations of the LGBT community in Boulder County.

September 23 is National Bisexuality Day, so go be a bi-friend

September 23 is National Bisexuality Day. It's not something you're going to see on the nightly news, and it's not something you're going to notice too much in the mainstream world, but it's nice to be aware of it just in case a bisexual comes out to you.

It's a day for bi folk and their families, friends and supporters to recognize and celebrate bisexuality, bisexual history, bisexual community and culture, and the bisexual people in their lives. A lot of people will wear blue, pink, or purple to show support, because those are the colors of the bisexual flag.

IRS Publishes Q&A Guidance for Same-sex Couples

HRC Back StoryLast week the IRS published Question and Answer guidance for same-sex couples and registered domestic partners residing in states with community property laws.  The Q&A provides taxpayers with plain language information on current IRS policies regarding same sex couples and registered domestic partners, such as how a registered domestic partner can claim head of household filing status on a tax return and to claim a registered domestic partner as a dependent for purposes of the dependency deduction and the exclusion for medical expense reimbursement.  The guidance also discusses adoption tax credits for registered domestic partners.
