Arts for the Soul Sept 11FUMC

Also, Ten Years Later:  Reflections on 9/11 has been created and exhibited specifically for this weekend by artist Barbara Frey and friends, a group called "Uncommon Cloth."  This exhibit expresses the intensity of emotion which remains in our personal and national psyches about the 9/11 attacks. Don't miss it!

Share Your Story of 9/11 at Telling Our Stories: September 9

On Friday, September 9 at 7:30 p.m., Telling Our Stories will feature a panel of speakers and will welcome others to speak during the open mic portion of the evening. The panel, which includes Out Boulder's Program Director Mauricio Shoup, is a segment of the the 9/11 series A Weekend of Remembrance, Healing and Wholeness at First United Methodist Church of Boulder.  Mauricio was a United Airlines Flight Attendant who worked aboard flight 93 often, Sept 9th being the last time.

While the cumulative loss of life on 9/11 was staggering, it is when we tell and hear our individual stories that we truly begin to grasp the impact of the attacks. Joining other days which "live in infamy," the personal specifics of September 11, 2001 will remain starkly etched in the memories of everyone old enough to remember that day. This evening we hear and remember some of the nationally known stories and recount our own experiences through word, music and dance.

The panel will also feature guitarist Lynn Patrick whose CD On the Wind, was nominated Best Instrumental Album of the Year with the Indie Acoustic Project; Joe Agne, one of First UMC's pastors; Laura Melling, educator, dancer, choreographer, festival creator, and poet; and Jean Hodges, social activist and co-founder of the Boulder Valley Safe Schools Coalition, and an ensemble from Naropa University's BFA Program.

BVSD Invites Community Input in September Curricular Alignment Discussions

The Boulder Valley School District invites all interested community members to play an important role in BVSD's alignment of its curriculum with the new Colorado Academic Standards (CAS) as adopted by the seven elected members of the Colorado State Board of Education in 2010. Under Colorado law and according to the Colorado Department of Education website, each Colorado local education agency, including BVSD, is required by state statute (CRS 22-7-1013) to review its standards in comparison with the CAS.  Following this review, BVSD must revise its standards as necessary to ensure that district standards meet or exceed the CAS.  To accomplish this, Colorado school districts may choose either to adopt the CAS verbatim or to revise their existing district standards.

BVSD has chosen the option of revising the curriculum to align with the CAS.  The BVSD curriculum is contained in the district's Curriculum Essentials Document adopted by the Boulder Valley Board of Education in 2009. This document underpins the BVSD Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum for elementary and secondary education in the district's 55 schools. For nearly one year, district curriculum directors, under the oversight of BVSD's chief academic officer, have been working to initially revise the district's existing Curriculum Essentials Document. A list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) and their answers can be found on the CDE website at: http://www.cde.state.co.us/cdeassess/UAS/Standards_FAQ.html.

Check out more information on their facebook page.

Walk Across America for Equality's Upcoming Boulder Stop

In mid-March, when Richard Noble announced he was walking across America to generate support for a federal American Equality Bill, many LGBTs found it difficult to believe he'd actually go through with it. "It is the mission of my civil rights walk across America over the next 18 months to pass as many city resolutions to support finding federal sponsorship of the bill," Richard said at the time. He started with a Resolution from the city of West Hollywood and he got a certificate of recognition from California Sen. Mark Leno's office.

But mostly, Richard has raised awareness among the people he's met in his difficult travels - at one point he got sick and found someone to take him in through his Facebook page. Richard is currently in hiking through Rocky Mountain National Park on his way to Boulder! If you would be able to offer housing to Richard when he passes through please contact him via his facebook page. You can also read his blog here.
