THIS THURSDAY!   RALLY & HEARING!
Update on Civil Unions
Thanks to YOUR Help, We are Getting Closer!

From our friends at One Colorado: SB-172, the Colorado Civil Union Act, has been assigned to the House Judiciary Committee. On March 31st, the bill will be heard in the House Judiciary Committee. The bill, which will provide committed same-sex couples with critical legal protections that are now only available to married spouses, will face both strong support and strong opposition in Committee testimony.

To show our House Representatives that Coloradans want civil unions, no matter how many testimonies the opposition presents, we want to pack the room for the hearing.  Meet representatives from One Colorado in the Old Supreme Court Chambers at the Capitol (200 E Colfax, Denver) at 1:15 p.m. on March 31st -- and wear red -- so that we can show our legislators, loud and clear, that we want civil unions in our state.

We need your support now, more than ever! For information on the RALLY that's happening this Thursday from 12:30 to 1pm,  Click Here!

In addition the RALLY, or if you can't attend, PLEASE write your House Representative now! Click here to a quick and easy link to write a letter to your Representative and ask them to support SB 172!

Out Boulder Welcomes Jessy!
She will be working on Increasing Out Boulder's Outreach and Inclusion of LGBT and Allied People of Color

Out Boulder received a grant from the Expanding Leadership Initiative from The Community Foundation, Boulder County. The purpose the grant is to improve and strengthen our outreach, programming and inclusion of LGBT and Allied People of Color.  Out Boulder is contracting with Jessy K. Pérez to help us implement the project. Below is an introduction from Jessy. To get involved with this exciting project, you can email Jessy at jperez@outboulder.org or call her at 720-434-4818

JessyMy name is Jessy K. Pérez. I was born in Cerro de Pasco, Perú, a mining town, where my parents taught at the local elementary school with the hope to fill in some of the educational and social disparities between the rural and the urban areas. We moved to the city of Lima two years later when my brother, Pablo, was born and inmediately diagnosed with Down syndrome.

I studied Law at the Universidad San Martín de Porres in Lima, Perú, and eventually moved to Colorado in 1999. Job opportunities were limited to me due to the fact that I needed to adjust my legal status in the United States. This process was long, and painful. I have done all kinds of 'pink collar' jobs during this time: customer service, clerk, receptionist, waitress, babysitting, personal care provider, etc. In developing countries like the the one I come from, people have the idea that everyone in "America" is rich. Ironically, I experienced here, for the first time, what it is like to have limited access to resources. Later, I worked at Sister Carmen Community Center assisting low-income families with basic needs.

My role at Out Boulder is to help implement a new programing for and by LGBT People of Color. More often that not, LGBT People of Color feel invisible even among the LGBT community, feeling the need to having to choose between one identity and the other one -- for example, gay or Latino depending on the setting. I am passionate about the idea of creating an organization, and potentially a community, where LGBT and allied People of Color can comfortably share all parts of their identity. I am also a volunteer to the Out Boulder Advocacy committee.

In addition to contracting part-time with Out Boulder, I'm pursuing a B.A. in Sociology. I have a son, Giancarlo, who will be 11 years old next week, and will be going to Middle School this fall! I'd love to talk or meet to hear your ideas. Please feel free to call me (720-434-4818) or email me jperez@outbouder.org!

"Sissies and Femmes" Potluck Discussion
at the Pride House
 Wednesday, March 30  5:30-7:30pm

Recently on Out Boulder's and One Colorado's Facebook pages, we asked the community what they thought of the slogan, "Sea Level is for Sissies."  It is a slogan used by a Boulder 10k race.

Some people responded that it's no big deal, and in fact the slogan is funny. Others thought the phrase is rooted in sexism and homophobia (to be a 'sissy' is to be like a woman, which in this framework is an insult). One person commented on Facebook, "Why mock people for being "weaker" or less fit or less intense? I'm just not a fan of a culture of competition that lifts people up by denigrating others, whether it's charged by gender/sexuality stereotypes or not.We thought we'd move the lively discussion from the virtual world to the real one :)

As Women's History Month wraps up, please join us on Wednesday, March 30th from 5:30 to 7:30pm at the Out Boulder Pride House (2132 14th St, Boulder) as we discuss "Gender: Sissies and Femmes."  Everyone is welcome - please bring a dish to share!

Special Free Screening of "Esmeralda del Desierto" with the Filmmaker from Tucson!

Part of the TRANSforming Gender Symposium at CU Boulder

Please join Out Boulder and VOICE as we proudly present "Esmeralda del Desierto" with filmmaker Oscar Jiménez, as part of CU Boulder's "TRANSforming Gender Symposium" on Saturday, April 2nd at noon. Esmeralda del Desierto, a short film made by Tucson artist and activist Oscar Jiménez, tells the story of Esmeralda, a transgender artist living in México.

To view a preview of the film...

Esmeralda has managed to carve out an existence despite strong odds. She has dreams grander than her town will allow, and so she sets out to conquer the fashion world in New York City. Esmeralda del Desierto celebrates the creative spirit that transcends borders.

A discussion with the filmmaker and Jordan Garcia of the American Friends Service Committee will follow the film. Oscar and Jordan will discuss the film, as well as connections and intersectionality among the immigrant and transgender rights movements, and what people can do to be allies for both communities.  Out Boulder and VOICE (Voices of Immigrant Children for Education and Equality) thank the Chinook Fund for their support of this special screening and our collaboration.

Ellis may not be a household name, but once you've seen her perform you're not likely to forget her. A mix of folk artist, dharma teacher, and comedienne, her music is best described by the effect it has on her audience rather than a particular genre. Simply put, she leaves audiences better than she finds them, with softened edges & opened hearts. With compelling songwriting and engaging performances, Ellis is quietly amassing a loyal following of supporters across the country.
