SpeakingOUT Volunteer Training -
Saturday, January 22 from 1 to 4pm in Boulder
|
|---|
SpeakingOUT is one of Out Boulder's most vital community programs. We train volunteers - just like you - to sit on panels with other LGBTQ and Allied people and share your story with community groups and classes. We provide panels to Boulder Valley School district middle and high schools, CU Boulder, Naropa and Front Range Community College classes and community organizations. Last year, our volunteers provided more than 50 panels reaching over 1,800 people.
The panels provide a fun, honest, engaging, educational format for audiences to listen and learn directly from LGBTQ and Allied people. After panelists share their stories, audience members are encouraged to ask questions. The panels conclude by providing action steps that audience members can take to support LGBTQ rights.
Audience evaluations and research overwhelming demonstrate that people sharing their stories is one of the most effective ways to build support for social change.
The next SpeakingOUT Volunteer Training will be held on Saturday, Jaunary 22 from 1 to 4pm. At the training, you will receive a basic training on LGBT terms and issues, as well as pointers and practice in sharing your story. The training is fun, engaging and free!
You must RSVP to attend the training. Please RSVP to cbusha@outboulder.org. Cathy will confirm with you and send you information on where the training is being held.

Transgender Awareness Week Survey - (Please consider completing it even if you didn't attend any TAW events)
|
|---|
In November, Out Boulder served as the lead organization for Boulder County's first-ever Transgender Awareness Week. Over 500 people attended an eclectic mix of social and educational events - all with the goal to raise awareness about transgender issues.
Out Boulder would like your input about Transgender Awareness Week (even if you didn't attend any events - if you didn't, we want to know why). It only takes 5 minutes to complete the survey, and will provide our planning committee with valuable information as we plan next year's Trans Awareness Week, as well as trans-related events and programs all year long.

Thursday, January 6, 2011 - 5:30 - 7:00 P.M. The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander
Alexander argues vigorously and persuasively that we have not ended racial caste in America; we have merely redesigned it. Jim Crow and legal racial segregation has been replaced by mass incarceration as a system of social control (More African Americans are under correctional control today... than were enslaved in 1850). Alexander offers an acute analysis of the effect of this mass incarceration upon former inmates who will be discriminated against, legally, for the rest of their lives, denied employment, housing, education, and public benefits. Most provocatively, she reveals how both the move toward colorblindness and affirmative action may blur our vision of injustice: most Americans know and don't know the truth about mass incarceration-but her carefully researched, deeply engaging, and thoroughly readable book should change that.
