Lt. Dan Choi is coming to Boulder! Thursday, December 2 - 7:30pm - Glenn Miller Ballroom, CU
|
|---|
FREE entry for students with a BuffOne Card $5.00 tickets for community members will be available at the doors. Doors will open at 6:30PM and the event will start at 7:30PM. Please arrive early, as seating will be available on a first come, first served basis.
Join the Cultural Events Board for an evening with former American infantry officer and renowned LGBT rights activist Lt. Dan Choi for "Courage and Camouflage: One Soldier's Experience with Don't Ask Don't Tell." Lt. Dan Choi is a West Point graduate, Iraq War veteran, Arabic linguist and LGBT activist. On March 19th, 2009 he publicly announced that he was gay on The Rachel Maddow Show. One month later, the Army had begun discharge proceedings against him. Because of those three words - "I am gay" - Lt. Dan Choi's life changed forever.
Lt. Choi was eventually discharged from the military on June 29th, 2010. He served for a decade under Don't Ask Don't Tell: a policy that requires gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender soldiers to conceal their sexual orientation. In his passionate talks, he shares personal stories, his involvement in the LGBT rights movement, and the need to stand up. For more information, visit culturaleventsboard.org.

Following the film, there will be a panel discussion and audience Q&A.
The evening concludes with a screening of "Red Without Blue" (begins at 7:45pm). RED WITHOUT BLUE is an artistic and groundbreaking portrayal of gender, identity, and the unswerving bond of twinship despite transformation. An honest portrayal of a family in turmoil, RWB follows a pair of identical twins as one transitions from male to female, while the other twin is gay. Captured over a period of three years, the film documents the twins and their parents, examining the struggle to redefine their family. |

Out Boulder and VOICE featured in the current issue of the Chinook Fund's Newsletter
|
|---|
Grantees VOICE (Voices of Immigrant Children for Education) and Out Boulder (Formerly Boulder Pride) are paving the way by doing joint organizing, movement building, and solidarity work around LGBTQ and Immigrant Justice in Boulder County!
(thanks to Ray Rodriguez for the photo).
This past fall, VOICE and OUT Boulder have organized a series of powerful events, including: * Co-sponsoring an event bringing legendary labor and Chicana movement activist Dolores Huerta to a packed audience in Lafayette, where she discussed the connections between today's fight for gay rights with her previous work organizing farm workers with Cesar Chavez in the 1960's. Huerta told audiences that " If we're going to make our progressive agenda a reality, we need to bring our movements together... we're all in our little silos, with labor over here, and immigrants' rights over here, and environmentalists over there. If we get together, we are the majority." * Screening the movie "Papers" (the story of undocumented youth and the challenges they face as they turn 18 without legal status) in local high schools * Hosting immigrant/queer activists from Arizona to mobize support against SB170, the draconian anti-immigrant and racial profiling law that was passed last Spring Throughout all of these events, VOICE and OUT Boulder activists took the opportunity to share powerful "coming out" stories of being undocumented and queer, while educating community members around supporting the DREAM Act and other policies to advance immigrant and LGBTQ rights. Chinook Fund is a proud supporter of this incredible work! |
