Greetings!

TAW

Planned by a passionate group of transgender and allied community volunteers representing many non-profits, schools and universities and community groups,Transgender Awareness Week is a diverse series of educational and informational events by and for the transgender community and their allies in Boulder County and surrounding communities.

The lead organization for Transgender Awareness Week is Out Boulder
(www.outboulder.org), Boulder County's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Community Center since 1994.Transgender is defined as
a person whose sex, gender identity, or gender expression differs from the sex assigned to them at birth. While an exact number is not known, it is widely accepted that 1% of the general population is transgender.

"Much (mis)
information about transgender people is from sensationalized TV shows and news stories about hate crimes and violence against transgender people. The truth is that despite significant societal stigmatization and challenges, most transgender thrive and are positive, contributing members of Boulder County," offered Cathy Busha, Co-Executive Director of Out Boulder.

"We want to provide opportunities for the community to unlearn myths and engage meaningfully and directly with transgender people and their families, said David Ensign, Out Boulder Board President. "Transgender Awareness Week also provides an opportunity for the LGB part of our community to get to know more about the "T." Finally, we also want to provide opportunities for transgender people, their families and allies to connect with one another for fun social opportunities, information-sharing and support."

Of special note is that several of the events during Trans Awareness Week are being held at and/or sponsored by churches and faith communities.

"Many people assume that all places of worship are anti-LGBT. As demonstrated by First United Methodist Church of Boulder,
First Congregational United Church of Christ of Longmont, Boulder Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Lafayette, and Light of Christ Ecumenical Catholic Community in Longmont, there are actually many open, affirming and welcoming congregations," shared Aicila Lewis, Co-Executive Director of Out Boulder. "In fact, many of these institutions believe that to affirm and advocate for marginalized people is central to their work."

During Trans Awareness Week, the Out Boulder Pride House  (2132 14th St, Boulder) will serve as "Trans Central Station"  - a hub of information, resources and volunteers. Trans-identified and allied volunteers will be available to answer questions. During our open hours (Monday-Thursday from 11:00am to 3:00pm) we will have art on the walls, as well as a clothing exchange at the Pride House  - please feel free to drop off clothing in good condition that you no longer wear, and pick up clothes that you'd like to take - free!.  All clothes remaining at the Pride House at the end of the week will be donated to Carriage House. People can also drop by to share their Trans "Leads and Needs" on a community board for resources and referrals for the trans community. All information collected will be compiled and emailed back out to the community.

Out Boulder thanks The Open Door Fund for their generous support of Transgender Awareness Week.

Thanks!

The Out Boulder Team

Join us for a show by Namoli Brennet - a poetic, genre-busting folk singer from Tucson, AZ!   Thursday, November 11 from 7 to 9pm
namoliPlease join Out Boulder and the Boulder Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship as we welcome nationally-touring trans artist, Namoli Brennet, to Boulder County for the first time! Thursday, November 11 from 7 to 9pm at the BVUUF (1241 Ceres Drive, Lafayette, CO).  Namoli and her music were recently featured in the film,"Out in the Silence." She has played at Pride Festivals all over the US. A $5 to $10 donation for the artist is requested - no one will be turned away.

When she first walks on the stage, transgender singer-songwriter Namoli Brennet may have a quiet and unassuming presence but her intense and haunting voice quickly fills the room with as much emotion as it can contain. Described by many as an inspiration, she has been touring all corners of the country since 2002, sharing her gift with a devoted fan base while putting over 250,000 miles on her trusty Volvo wagon.  She's played over a thousand shows and almost as many instruments citing guitar, piano, mandolin, harmonica, bass, drums and flute among her most well-honed.  Her albums have been described as breathtaking and incredible and are a well-crafted journey through achingly real and heartfelt experiences.  Her technique draws on a wide range of influences, everyone from Shawn Colvin and Jonatha Brooke to Patty Griffin and Joni Mitchell.

Please help support LGBTQ arts and social programs in Boulder County!

An Evening of Transgender-Themed Films including "Red Without Blue" and

"Faces and Facets of Transgender Experience"

Friday, November 19th in Longmont

RWBPlease join us on Friday, November 19th in the evening at the First Congregational United Church of Christ as Out Boulder, the Light of Christ Ecumenical Catholic Community and the UCC co-sponsor a Potluck and Evenings of Transgender-themed films.

Please arrive promptly at 6pm for the potluck. We will first watch the new version of "Project Visibility" a film by Boulder County Aging Serves that explores aging for the LGBT Community. The new version includes a Trans story.  Next, we will watch "Faces and Facets of the Transgender Experience" - a film by PFLAG Boulder County that features 18 Boulder/Denver-area families sharing their stories. Following the film, there will be a panel discussion and audience Q&A.

The evening concludes with a screening of "Red Without Blue" (begins at 7:45pm).  RED WITHOUT BLUE is an artistic and groundbreaking portrayal of gender, identity, and the unswerving bond of twinship despite transformation. An honest portrayal of a family in turmoil, RWB follows a pair of identical twins as one transitions from male to female, while the other twin is gay. Captured over a period of three years, the film documents the twins and their parents, examining the struggle to redefine their family.
