Greetings!
In the wake of recent sad and painful news on the national level, many of us have been asking what we can do to stop anti-LGBT bullying and suicides.
Out Boulder believes that an engaged, active, visible, positive and connected LGBTQ and Allied community are some of the most important tools we have to create social change. We encourage you to participate in some or all the events listed below - to Get Out, Find Out and Help Out.
And if you don't see an event or program that interests you, we encourage you to help get one started - and we will help you. Contact Cathy at cbusha@outboulder.org for more information.
Yours in community,
The Out Boulder Team |

| This Thursday, October 7th at 7pm at the
Lafayette Library - Out Boulder and VOICE present Dolores Huerta, with introduction by Jessie Ulibarri!
|
|---|
This Thursday, October 7th at 7pm at the Lafayette Main Library - Free! Out Boulder is honored to partner with VOICE (Voices of Immigrant Children for Education and Equality) to welcome Dolores Huerta to Colorado for "Unity in Community - Dolores Huerta Makes the Connections Between LGBT Rights, Immigration and Other Kinds of Oppression."
Ms. Huerta will be introduced by Jessie Ulibarri. Jessie Ulibarri is the Colorado Director for Mi Familia Vota, a non-partisan organization committed to enhancing the civic participation among Latinos throughout the state. For nearly a decade he has worked in politics at the local, state and federal levels, organizing campaigns and advancing policies that strengthen Colorado's underserved communities. In 2008, he helped to architect the defeat of Amendment 46, the anti-affirmative action ballot initiative, making Colorado the first state in the nation to reject the initiative at the ballot. In a volunteer capacity, Jessie is the Chair of the Human Rights and Community Relations Advisory Board for the City of Denver, and is a member of the Denver GLBT Commission, the Board of Directors for Colorado Progressive Coalition, the Board of Directors for Colorado Jobs with Justice, the Alumni Board for the Center for Progressive Leadership - Colorado, and was on the founding Board of Directors for the Colorado Latino Forum.
Dolores Huerta, who is 80 years old, is the co-founder of the United Farm Workers of America. She worked along side Cesar Chavez in the fight for fair wages and treatment of the people who harvest our crops. She helped win basics like toilets and drinking water for the farm workers and later disability insurance for them. Today she is President of her own foundation and a tireless advocate for immigration reform, marriage equality for LGBT people and social justice. Please join us for this very special evening of conversation, community and activism...and a chance to meet a legendary community organizer and ally!
Out Boulder and VOICE thank the Chinook Fund for their support of our collaborative work! Want to get involved? Contact Cathy at cbusha@outboulder.org. |

| Free Film and Potluck in Longmont with St Vrain Safe Schools Coalition - Monday, October 18 at 6:30pm at the Longmont Library (409 4th Ave) |
|---|
We will watch the film "Out in the Silence" with a Panel Discussion and Potluck After the Movie. The Panel will consist of students, parents, and community members speaking about the experience of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and questioning (LGBTIQ) youth in our community. What is it like to be an LGBTQ student in the St Vrain School District.
Out in the Silence captures the remarkable chain of events that unfold when the announcement of filmmaker Joe Wilson's wedding to another man ignites a firestorm of controversy in his small Pennsylvania hometown. Drawn back by a plea for help from the mother of a gay teen being tormented at school, Wilson's journey dramatically illustrates the universal challenges of being an outsider in a conservative environment and the transformation that is possible when those who have long been constrained by a traditional code of silence summon the courage to break it.
Co-sponsored by Out Boulder, Boulder County Public Health, PFLAG Boulder County and OASOS. |
