Out Boulder is honored to partner with VOICE (Voices of Immigrant Children for Education and Equality) to welcome Dolores Huerta to Colorado for "Unity in Community - Dolores Huerta Makes the Connections Between LGBT Rights, Immigration and Other Kinds of Oppression."
Dolores Huerta, who is 80 years old, is the co-founder of the United Farm Workers of America. She worked along side Cesar Chavez in the fight for fair wages and treatment of the people who harvest our crops. She helped win basics like toilets and drinking water for the farm workers and later disability insurance for them. Today she is President of her own foundation and a tireless advocate for immigration reform, marriage equality and social justice. Please join us for this very special evening of conversation, community and activism...and a chance to meet a legendary community organizer and ally! | Reflections on the Sobriety Challenge
|
|---|
| This past weekend was the Sobriety Challenge - an opportunity for LGBT people to abstain from alcohol, marijuana, and recreational drugs for 96 hours. Here are some sobering statistics about substance abuse and the LGBT Community:
LGBT people who are using large amounts of substances are less likely to work for their equal rights.
Experiences with homophobia / biphobia / transphobia tend to increase substance use among LGBT people
When compared with the general population, LGBT people are more likely to use alcohol and drugs.
20-25 % of gay men and lesbians are heavy alcohol users. (That compares with 2-10 % of heterosexuals in studies.)
Heavy substance use can impair judgment and result in risky sexual behavior.
Heterosexism can contribute to substance abuse by increasing internalized homophobia & a negative self-concept.
LGBT youth may use substances to deal with stigma, to deny same-sex attractions, or to cope with anti-LGBT experiences.
Compared to heterosexual women, lesbians are over 5 times more likely to use alcohol every day and more than twice as likely to get inebriated.
Bisexual people report higher rates of alcohol use and alcohol-related problems than do heterosexuals and, in some cases, than do lesbians and gay men.
The lifetime incidence of IV drug use among transgender individuals is very elevated: 34% among MTF individuals and 18 % among FTM individuals.
LGBT people are more likely than the general population to continue heavy drinking into later life.
LGBT people may be especially ripe targets for alcohol advertising because they so rarely see their images reflected in mainstream media. Therefore, ads for alcohol aimed at the LGBT community may be especially effective in getting LGBT people to drink more. (thank you to Dr. Glenda Russell for compiling these statistics) At Out Boulder, we care about you and the Health and Wellness of our community. Each day, our programs such as SpeakingOUT work to create a safer, more affirming Boulder County. If you or someone you know is struggling with substance abuse issues, help is available. Please contact cbusha@outboulder.org or call us at 303-499-5777 for support.

| Composer seeks Collaboration with a Trans Woman
|
|---|
My name is Anthony Green, and I am currently in his 3rd year of doctorate studies at CU Boulder. I am planning on producing an opera about 3 important events in the life of a fictional character, Alex, who is a trans woman. I am taking on the responsibility of writing the libretto (script) for the opera, and would like to collaborate with someone who has first hand experience with gender reassignment. The opera plans on being staged at CU in 2012. Ideally, the collaboration would include interviews, objective opinions, and adding elements to Alex that I would otherwise not think of. It would be a way not only for me to get the libretto right without guessing, but also a way for a trans woman to tell some of her story, if you choose this option. Please contact me for details if you are interested: anthony.r.green@gmail.com or (401) 286 - 7135. You can find out more about me at www.compositiontoday.com/a_green Thanks! |
