FYI

TIP OF THE WEEK

Boxed Water is Better

Our goal has two parts: First, create a product for a growing market (bottled water) that lessens the environmental impact and gives back a bit - which simply makes us 'better' as we say, and a step in the right direction. Second, Boxed Water Is Better is an ever growing and adapting project. R&D is core to everything we do and we've committed to constantly exploring new technology to lessen the impact of the portable water market while always giving back.

CREATION STATS

Of all the water on Earth, 97.5% is contained within the oceans, while the remaining 2.5% is freshwater lakes and frozen water locked up in glaciers and the polar ice caps - almost 69% of the fresh water on Earth is ice.

SCRIPTURE IN NATURE

GREY2K USA: A Global Voice for Greyhounds

(Florida State Representative Mark Pafford visits with Christine Dorchak and Carey Theil)

www.grey2kusa.org

Did you know that there are only 7 states left in the United States that allow greyhound racing?

Formed in March of 2001, GREY2K USA is the largest greyhound protection organization in the United States. As a non-profit 501(c)4 organization, we work to pass stronger greyhound protection laws and to end the cruelty of dog racing on both national and international levels. We also promote the rescue, rehoming and adoption of greyhounds across the globe.

Greyhound racing is cruel and inhumane, and should be prohibited. GREY2K USA was the first organization to successfully outlaw dog racing using the ballot initiative process. In November 2008, the citizens of Massachusetts chose compassion over cruelty and voted 56%-44% to close down Raynham and Wonderland Greyhound Parks. Since our formation, twenty-six dog tracks have closed for live racing all across the country, and the number of states with dog racing has been cut in half.

In recent years, GREY2K USA has been instrumental in fighting for stronger laws to protect racing greyhounds. In Massachusetts and New Hampshire, we successfully passed laws requiring that these states inform the public on the number of greyhounds injured while racing, and report on the ultimate fate of racing dogs. Also in Massachusetts, we helped pass the first state-funded greyhound adoption trust fund in United States history. In Florida and New Hampshire, we passed legislation to restore greyhounds to the protections of anti-cruelty laws.

Keep up with the tremendous progress that is being made in eliminating greyhound racing in the United States by logging on to the Dog Blog or join the Governor's Initiative and let your voice be heard by the governors who still allow this inhumane sport to operate in their state.

As long as dog racing exists, greyhounds will be overbred and discarded by racetracks...consider ADOPTING a greyhound into your family.

CatholicStewardsofCreation.com supports the principles and hard work of Grey2K USA and we encourage all of our readers to become involved in seeing the day arrive when greyhounds no longer have to suffer and racing is forever ended.

Beagle Freedom Project

beaglefreedomproject.org

Beagle Freedom Project began in December 2010 when Shannon Keith received information that beagles who were used for animal experiments in a research lab were to be given a chance at freedom. Our mission is rescuing and finding homes for beagles used in laboratory research.

Beagles are the most popular breed for lab use because of their friendly, docile, trusting, forgiving, people-pleasing personalities. The research industry says they adapt well to living in a cage, and are inexpensive to feed. Research beagles are usually obtained directly from commercial breeders who specifically breed dogs to sell to scientific institutions.

With time, patience, play, companionship, love - and most of all, freedom - these dogs will learn how to become dogs, and their transformation will be amazing.

Our hope is that with your help, we can encourage more research labs to release animals and give them a chance at life, instead of destroying adoptable pets.

Beagle Freedom Project is a service of

Animal Rescue, Media & Education (ARME). Founded in 2004, ARME is a nonprofit advocacy group created to eliminate the suffering of all animals through rescue, public education and outreach. ARME has found homes for thousands of homeless and abandoned animals. In 2004 ARME organized the first-ever "Shelter Drive" to provide creature comforts to homeless animals such as beds, toys and treats. ARME's Shelter Drive became an annual tradition uniting volunteers with businesses that allowed drop boxes for donations. ARME's compassionate army also helps feed and shelter displaced animals when Southern California fires strike residential areas. As a 501(c)(3) organization contributions to ARME are tax-deductible. Donate to Beagle Freedom today.

We're nearing the end of The United Nation's Water for Life Decade 2005- 2015. Water quality, quantity, and availability is crucial to advancing the green economy. Water in the green economy focuses on the socio-economic opportunities that proper water management provides to social and economic development, while also safeguarding freshwater ecosystems. In green economies, the water's role in maintaining biodiversity, ecosystem services, and drinking water for humanity are recognized and valued.

THE ART OF LIFE

The Foundation for Sacred Arts

The Foundation for Sacred Arts is a Catholic nonprofit organization founded to stimulate a vibrant renewal in the patronage and production of Christian sacred arts (art, architecture, and music); and to advance the pursuit of excellence in conformity with truth, goodness, and beauty in these arts; for the glory of God, the life of His Church, and the transformation of culture.

The Church has long recognized the power of the sacred arts to communicate truth and to turn souls devoutly toward Christ. Throughout Christian history, the Church has commissioned great works of art, architecture, and music to advance her mission of worship, catechesis, and evangelization, inviting the world more deeply into the mysteries of the faith.

Tall Timbers: Stewards of Wildlife and Wildlands

Ecological Forestry Research

Forestry research at Tall Timbers has been an important component of the stations total research effort from the start when Henry Beadel dedicated his estate to the formation of Tall Timbers Research Station in 1958. He wanted to establish a place where forest dynamics under the influence of fire could be studied over the long-term. Research began with the Tall Timbers Fire Ecology Plots now named the Stoddard Fire Plots, which were established in 1959 to examine the role of fire frequency in forest succession.

Ecological Forestry at Tall Timbers takes a holistic view of savanna, woodland and forest ecosystem management. Whatever management activities we conduct in any of the circumstances influences the system function, thus wildlife habitat, and the species associated with a particular forest structure. Each wildlife species has specific niche requirements and the arrangement and architecture of a stand provide the visual cues that determine habitat suitability. Prescribed fire plays an important role in management of these strand structural types because fire plays an important role in regeneration and thus future stand dominants.
