FYI

Bisbee the Texas A&M cat has died. With more than 5,000 likes on Facebook and followed by more than 3,000 folks on Twitter, Bisbee was as much a part of the Texas A&M community as any human. Bisbee was found beneath the building he called home, the Biological Science Building East, where it appeared that Bisbee passed on quietly.

TIP OF THE WEEK

Vetstreet.com has a great Guide to Cats. Vetstreet.com is a new site dedicated to giving you the most accurate information possible, so you can keep your dogs and cats healthy.

CREATION STATS

The lifespan of feral cats is hard to determine accurately, although one study reported a median age of 4.7 years, with a range between 0 to 8.3 years, while another paper referenced a mean life span of 2 - 8 years. For contrast, in captivity, an average life expectancy for male indoor cats at birth is 12 to 14 years, with females usually living a year or two longer.

THE GOOD NEWS

Blind Cat Rescue & Sanctuary

Blind Cat Rescue & Sanctuary was started in 2005 to answer the need for a safe place for blind cats that were deemed unadoptable by regular shelters and were going to be killed just because they are blind.

Rescue isn't glamorous. It's about comforting a scared cat whose owners abandoned him at the shelter after living together for 10 years, it's about holding a young animal's head as they take their last breath when it has been determined that their previous owners abused them so badly that they can't be saved.

It is about restoring hope and dignity to creatures for whom no one else cares about. We are but humble vessels to help these magnificent creatures find their forever homes. The responsibility is big but the returns on our emotional investment are greater. You cannot place a value on the look of contentment that comes when an animal is clean, exercised, warm, fed and safe for the first time in its life.

We will accept any cat into our sanctuary that is certified by a vet as a blind cat. Cats with 20% or less sight are accepted as blind.

Blind cats are cats that just happen to not be able to see.

Blind Cat Rescue also has a wonderful new COOKBOOK for purchase:

This will make a great addition to any cooks collection of books and will also make a great gift for Cat Lovers at Christmas.

Blind Cat Rescue is a one-in-a-million non-profit so deserving of support and donations.

IN THE NEWS

ALLEY CAT RESCUE

Alley Cat Rescue (ACR) works to protect cats on several levels: locally through rescue, rehabilitation and adoption of cats and nationally through a network of Cat Action Teams, called CAT. ACR is dedicated to the health, well-being and welfare of all cats: domestic, stray, abandoned and feral.

Alley Cat Rescue is helping to solve the crisis and tragedy of unwanted and abandoned cats.

  • We are saving lives with innovative hands-on programs.
  • We have rescued thousands of cats and placed them in loving homes.
  • We assist with all aspects of feral cat care, wildlife predation and rabies control.
  • We also provide information on cat health, cat behavior, feline diseases, and special needs.

FERAL CAT RESCUE

Feral Cat Rescue, Inc. of Great Mills, Maryland, is a grass roots organization founded in 2007 by a group of volunteers who were profoundly moved by the suffering of feral cats and kittens in their communities. We believe that these valuable animals deserve humane treatment and care, as do all cats. Our volunteers include a large community of people who have opened their hearts and unselfishly given their time to improve the quality of life of these animals forgotten by so many.

"Authors like cats because they are such quiet, lovable, wise creatures, and cats like authors for the same reasons."
~ Robertson Davies ~

THE ART OF LIFE

Don Nedobeck

www.nedobeck.com

"You have to do it this way - your way is wrong!" This is what teachers at the Milwaukee College told him, according to Patrick, his son and biggest fan, who works closely with Nedobeck. "Dad draws from the soul," he continues, "and that's where true art comes from." It is through his true art that he has made a living for over 30 years. In addition to his painting, Nedobeck has authored numerous books from his personal observations under "New Wrinkle Press," his publishing company. To date, there are over 800,000 Nedobeck books in print, including "No Known English Translation" and "Nedobeck's Alphabet Book". New Wrinkle Press also produces Nedobeck's note cards, calendars and prints. His signed prints have been collected by nearly 30,000 people world wide, and have universal appeal - they conjure up laughter and smiles at first glance.

When Nedobeck's not using his hands to create art or music, he has his hands in the soil - his real form of meditation. Perhaps that's where Don Nedobeck's imagination is planted, tilled, shaped and continues to grow, producing art for the child in all of us.

STEWARD ALERTS

For Greater Glory

What price would you pay for Freedom? In the exhilarating action epic FOR GREATER GLORY an impassioned group of men and women each make the decision to risk it all for family, faith and the very future of their country, as the film's adventure unfolds against the long-hidden, true story of the 1920s Cristero War, the daring people¹s revolt that rocked 20th

Century North America.

Academy Award® nominee Andy Garcia headlines an acclaimed cast as General Gorostieta, the retired military man who at first thinks he has nothing personal at stake as he and his wife (Golden Globe winner Eva Longoria) watch Mexico fall into a violent civil war. Yet the man who hesitates in joining the cause will soon become the resistance¹s most inspiring and self-sacrificing leader, as he begins to see the cost of religious persecution on his countrymen . . . and transforms a rag-tag band of rebels into a heroic force to be reckoned with. The General faces impossible odds against a powerful and ruthless government. Yet is those he meets on the journey ¬ youthful idealists, feisty renegades and, most of all, one remarkable teenager named Jose ¬who reveals to him how courage and belief are forged even when justice seems lost.

More important to teens, it's full of fun too and things that'll make you feel good to be doing your part to care for Michigan's environment.

GARDENING

Plant A Fall Cover Crop

As the last of our summer vegetable crops are harvested and the garden beds are cleared of plant debris, the fall weather is still warm enough to sow over-winter 'cover crops', which restore fertility and humus, and enrich the soil for planting next spring. Cover crops are tilled under in late winter or early spring. Cover crops, such as fall rye, crimson clover, buckwheat and others are easy to grow. When they are digested by soil microorganisms they restore organic matter and nutrient levels in the soil. Because they are sown thickly, they also help to outcompete weeds. Cover crops also control erosion from heavy winter rains, and help prevent the soil from compacting over winter.
