THE GOOD NEWS

DOGS AND PAWZ

dogsnpawz.com
Colorado is experiencing the worst wildfire in its history and we can only imagine the toll it is taking on area residents. When we think about disasters we usually think about the people that the disaster affects but we tend to forget about, or simply don't think about, the animals that the disasters take a toll on too.
Colorado Springs and the area around it is one of the areas that has been the most affected by the blaze. It has been reported that one person has lost their life, 10 are currently missing, and nearly 350 homes have been destroyed. Thousands of people have been evacuated-while some have been able to take their pets with them others have had to board their pets, including dogs, cats, horses and more until they have been cleared to return to the area.
A website has been set up by The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, also called the HSPPR, for persons that have been evacuated. The website provides a list of area shelters and facilities that will board pets during the evacuation process. The site is also asking for assistance from volunteers, donation of supplies that are desperately needed, and donations of money to help cover the cost of caring for pets that have been displaced by the wildfire.
There are several locations that are offering to board pets if they can't accompany their humans. One of those places is the HSPPR. They have taken in over 250 pets since the wildfires started. Other places that are housing evacuees' pets are The Larimer Humane Society in Fort Collins, Colorado and The Colorado State Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Fort Collins. Larimer Humane Society rescue crews have also been rescuing animals in the High Park area neighborhoods that have been left behind. They have been checking in on pets, providing them with food and water requested by their owners, reuniting pets and their owners and helping with medical needs.
You can go to the Colorado Division of Emergency Management website and the Google Crisis Response map for an up-to-date map and information about the Waldo Canyon Fire. There are several ways to help the pets and their families that have been affected by the wildfires. PetSolutions.com is one way to help. They are matching every pet supply product people donate to four Colorado organizations that help with the pets in their care. Those four organizations are the Larimer Humane Society of Fort Collins, The Moore Animal Hospital of Fort Collins, A Cut Above Pet Grooming of Colorado Springs, and the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region of Colorado Springs. PetSolutions developed a list of the pet supplies each organization requested so they can continue to help the dogs, cats, and other animals that have been displaced from their homes.
The most requested pet supply items are toys and treats to help keep the pets from being bored. Other items needed are towels, blankets, and litter. PetSolutions will also match Gift Card donations giving the organizations the opportunity to purchase specific products they require. If you are interested in donating pet supplies to some of the displaced pets in Colorado you can visit www.PetSolutions.com or call Customer Service at 800-737-3868 for the list of shelters and requested pet supplies. PetSolutions will be matching donations through
Thursday, July 12, 2012.

IN THE NEWS
Tens of thousands of people and their animals have been forced to leave their homes because of the Colorado fires. Won't you please help?
FUND RAISER: Surf Dog Ricochet raising funds for PET OXYGEN MASKS
________________________________
The fires in Colorado are devastating, and I just wanted to do something to help. So, I contacted my good FURiend Emma from the Emma Zen Foundation.
She advocates, educates & provides pet oxygen masks to fire departments with the donations that come through her Foundation and her Facebook page.
I asked if I could do a fundraiser for her foundation & raise funds to purchase as many oxygen masks as possible for the Fire Departments in Colorado. Smoke damage in pets can be devastating. Each pet oxygen mask kits costs $75 (3 sizes per kit).
Since it's only the beginning of fire season, I'd also like to raise enough money to get oxygen masks to as many states that are high risk for fires, BEFORE a fire strikes. It's going to be a long summer.
Through this process, I hope we can raise awareness about preparedness, and what to do in case of a fire or other emergencies.
Please make a tax deductible donation of any size. Even a buck helps!! And, if you can't donate, please share! Thank you for your support!!

FATHER RON'S COLUMN
Sticky Prophets ~by Father Ron Camarda
Father Ron reflects on a truth that should stick to us like glue. When we reflect on prophets, they are like sandpaper. They tend to be so abrasive to our senses. Then I realized that when we are baptized, we are baptized as priests, prophets and kings (or queens)! We are abrasive without Jesus. READ MORE... |

~by Sister Marie Rene, S.S.J.
Give thanks to God! The Bible tells us on numerous occasions that it is important to remember our roots. Even Jesus asked us to approach the Father with the "perfect" prayer. Sister Rene takes us to an Old Testament scripture that says it all.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"The fires of the last week show us just how precious God's creation is. We can sometimes take the beauty of Colorado for granted. But the devastation of forest lands and the destruction of family homes, combined with the struggle of so many ranchers and farmers across the state who urgently need moisture - these things remind us that the world is a fragile place, and our job is to protect, steward and share it well."
~ Archbishop Charles J. Chaput~ June 16, 2000
