CSC UPDATE
|
Last week, Frank Gromling reported in his NATURE CALLS column an interview he had with Hardy Jones on the death of hundreds of dolphins in Peru. At that time, the event was still being studied and investigated. This week the cause of the event has been found and publicized.
Based on data gathered in Peru, BlueVoice has concluded that a plausible source of the violent sounds that led to the death of hundreds of dolphins is seismic testing by oil companies. Seismic testing is now proposed for the east coast of the United States from Florida to Delaware. Blue Voice intends to bring the evidence surrounding the mass mortality of dolphins in Peru into the discussions of permitting seismic testing in US waters.

IN THE NEWS
Moments With Baxter:
A Certified Therapy Dog
An amazing dog named Baxter, who was America's oldest working therapy dog is remembered for the beautiful and incredible love he gave to so many patients in Hospice care.
After a puppyhood of abuse, Baxter grew up to become a certified therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International, and enjoyed fame and fans worldwide for his years of volunteer work at San Diego Hospice, where he spent time cuddling, licking faces, and providing smiles for people in hospice care. He even became the subject of an award-winning book: "Moments with Baxter: Comfort and Love From the World's Best Therapy Dog."
Many of those who knew Baxter believe that it was his own ailments that made him such a powerful companion to hospice patients as encapsulated in this article. The arthritis that plagued him during the latter half of his life left him unable to walk. His owner, Melissa Joseph, helped him carry out his duties at the hospice by pulling him around in a cart and carrying him to patients' beds.
Baxter passed into the arms of God
at the age of 19.

THIS WEEK'S COMMENTARY
U.N. Me - A review by
Catholic Patti Maguire Armstrong
The world today is as dangerous as it has ever been, and the need for international confederations is greater than ever. Yet the United Nations has abdicated its responsibility to foster peace and freedom, instead allowing dictators, thugs, and tyrants to tie its hands and dominate its agenda. This is the subject of U.N. Me, a shocking new feature-length documentary from MPI filmmaker Ami Horowitz.
Patti prefaces her review with "I hated what was in this film, but not that it was made." She has a must read commentary that will have you immersed in its relevance and begging you to take your head out of the sand!

THE ART OF LIFE
Jason Tako

www.jasontako.com
If there is one thing to describe Jason and his art it is passionate. While being a committed husband and father he spends his remaining time enveloped in drawing or painting whatever he finds beautiful. As a devout Catholic, you could say his main artistic goal is to become the best artist he can be and express the beauty of God's creation through his brushstrokes.
One of the things Jason enjoys most about his art is painting from life and going out into nature and gathering experiences that will later be brushed onto canvas. Jason has a deep passion for the north woods and prairies. Some of his favorite memories are camping trips up in northern Minnesota. These trips have turned into beautiful paintings that express his passion for the north. Jason also has a love for simpler times that are long since gone; old barns, family life of the prairie and pioneer days, still life paintings with hand-sewn bunnies and flowers and other subjects express this longing for the past.

VOTE for DANIEL the Miracle Beagle to be
HERO DOG of the YEAR
For many people "gas chambers" represent an awful, desensitized form of killing. Many do not realize that such organized killing still occurs today. Each year, millions of animals are euthanized through this brutal process. Rarely has anything breathing survived a gas chamber but in October 2011, this improbable survival story became a reality for Daniel the beagle in an Alabama gas chamber. Through improbable odds, Daniel was still wagging his tail after the gas chamber that he was locked in killed eighteen other dogs. The animal control officer, lacking the heart to make a second attempt, agreed to put Daniel up for adoption. Daniel was quickly spirited to a foster home in Tennessee where he was named after the Biblical survivor of the lion's den. Next, with the help of Pilots and Paws, New Jersey based Eleventh Hour Rescue brought Daniel to New Jersey where the Dwyer Family of Nutley adopted him into a forever home. Daniel has taken nicely to the fun-loving life of a dog in a house with four other dogs. However, Daniel has also become quite the celebrity with appearances on local, national, and worldwide news outlets, highlighted by an exciting appearance on Anderson Cooper Live. Such renown has brought Daniel the opportunity to make a difference. Daniel's adorable face and affable personality have made him a hero dog to thousands of his other canine brothers and sisters as he has become an advocate for shelter adoptions and anti-gassing laws in various state legislatures. "Daniel's Law" will soon be passed in Pennsylvania to outlaw the use of the gas chamber.

GARDENING
From the folks at the
National Wildlife Federation
we have the 4 myths of Wildlife Gardening.
Have you fallen for one of the top gardening myths?
Myth #1: Wildlife will destroy my food garden.
- False. Use strategic fencing to protect special plants from deer, rabbits or groundhogs and netting to protect fruit from birds. Or just plant extra to share the bounty. Many vegetables actually require bees and other animal pollinators to produce.
Myth #2: You need a yard to garden for wildlife.
- False. Many species, like birds and butterflies, are easy to attract since they are so mobile. If you have a smaller space, just think in smaller scale. For example, instead of a bird bath, simply fill a small dish with water.
Myth #3: Wildlife gardens are weedy and messy.
- False. Many native plants are ornamental and commonly available in garden centers, including colorful flowers, trees, shrubs and grasses. Just a little simple maintenance can help you keep a very neat and tidy looking garden that attracts wildlife and contributes to the local ecosystem.
Myth #4: Providing water for wildlife creates a mosquito haven.
- False. It takes a minimum of about a week for the
metamorphosis from egg to winged adult mosquito to be completed, so emptying your bird bath or other water source every few days eliminates the chance of creating a mosquito nursery.
