THE GOOD NEWS
BLUE VOICE
www.bluevoice.org
BlueVoice.org is an ocean conservation organization founded in 2000 by Hardy Jones and Ted Danson. Its mission is to protect dolphins, whales, and other marine mammals and to raise popular awareness about the plight of the oceans. BlueVoice has fought to end the slaughter of dolphins in Japan and to expose the harmful levels of toxins in the marine environment and their impact on both marine mammals and humans. For some twenty five years members of the BlueVoice team have worked both to end the killing of dolphins and whales and to explore the universe of dolphins in the open sea. Ample evidence now exists to show that dolphins are highly intelligent, social and sentient animals with brains and minds of equal magnitude to those of humans.
In his book, The Voice of the Dolphins, Jones reports his story of a life spent working with dolphins-working to understand them and working to save them. The REVIEW of Jones' book, which was written by Julia Whitty, will have you racing to buy it!
Hardy Jones is a former journalist with CBS News and UPI. He has been making television documentaries about the oceans and marine mammals in particular for more than 20 years. "The experience of forcing Japanese fishermen to release hundreds of dolphins simply by pointing a camera at them led to the original concept of BlueVoice.org," says Jones. "The advent of the internet has given us a tool of unprecedented power to end some of the brutalities committed against marine mammals and the oceans."
Jones shares; "Our film 'If Dolphins Could Talk,' hosted by actor Michael Douglas, complimented the work of many environmental organizations when we broadcast video footage of dolphins dying in tuna nets. It was soon afterwards Heinz announced it would no longer accept tuna caught by surrounding dolphins with nets."
Visit this week's NATURE CALLS by Frank Gromling for a SPECIAL UPDATE on his personal interview with Hardy Jones who has been investigating a dolphin disaster in Peru.

IN THE NEWS
Woman Who Swims with Killer Whales-
Ingrid Visser
The first New Zealander to research orcas exclusively, Ingrid Visser began her study for a PhD in 1992. However, it was two months before she actually saw one of the impressive sea mammals. Since then she has spotted some individuals dozens of times, taking thousands of photographs.
Named the 'Princess of Whales' by a women's magazine, she acknowledges the fierce nature of orcas but regards them fondly, she is totally obsessed with Orcas. She founded The Orca Project, a public charity working to change the public's attitude and government supervision of marine mammals in captivity through research, investigation and education. They provide the public with a look behind the scenes of the marine mammal captivity/entertainment industry and address the ethical issues of keeping orcas in captivity.
Visser, who is based at Tutukākā in Northland, takes every opportunity to view the animals. When a message comes through to the Orca Project Hotline, which she set up, she ties her inflatable boat to her car and heads off to follow up the sighting.
Catch the 60-minute special on The Woman Who Swims With Killer Whales
In 2007, Ingrid's semi-autobiographical book, Swimming with Orca came out to excellent reviews around the world.

THE ART OF LIFE
Scott Christensen-
He paints the sea and its creatures
Scott Christensen began painting with oils on stretched canvas in 1997 at the age of 26. Four years later, Scott resigned from his position leading a horizontal drilling gang to study Visual Art full-time. Scott's wife had just given birth to their first children-twins. As Scott recalls, 'failure was not an option.'
Since then, he has sold over 250 originals and over 3500 Canvas Editions. Scott united his ability to create with his love of the Australian coastline, and has never looked back.
He represents these ever-changing environments with vibrant colour, sharp composition, and attention to every detail. His work has been described as 'stylish, photo-realism', 'unique, and very Australian'. Scott Christensen paints full-time from his Studio/Gallery in Cleveland, in the Redland Shire of Queensland.
Scott's work is held in private and public collections within Australia and in private collections everywhere from the USA to the UK.

STEWARD ALERTS
Tell Your Senator: Support the RESTORE Act! It's been over a year and a half since oil finally stopped spewing from BP's well in the Gulf of Mexico, but work to restore the Gulf is just beginning. Congress is poised to pass a bill that would direct 80% of the fines that BP must pay for the oil disaster back to the Gulf region for environmental and economic restoration, but we need your help to make Gulf restoration a reality in 2012. With bi-partisan support of 9 of 10 Gulf senators and 36 members of the House of Representatives, the RESTORE ACT will help direct fines toward the Gulf where it's needed most. This funding can provide billions of dollars to support long-term restoration efforts supporting the region's vital fishing and tourism industries, while providing critical jobs and economic recovery for the communities that were hardest hit by the disaster. BP's fines will also be used to develop a comprehensive ecosystem restoration plan. It's exactly what we've been calling for all along, because it's vital to the long-term health of the Gulf. The Gulf of Mexico as a country would be the seventh largest economy in the world. Help us pass the RESTORE ACT in 2012 not only will restore the marine and coastal ecosystem but it will provide economic benefits everyone in United States. Now is the time to act. Congress needs to hear that there is widespread support for this bill and you want action in Early 2012. Please take a minute and tell your senator to SUPPORT THE RESTORE ACT today. _______________________________________

STEWARD ACTIVITIES
Plant a Fish
Plant A Fish (PAF) is an active, hands-on outdoor education and restoration experience developed by Fabien Cousteau, third-generation ocean explorer, documentary filmmaker and environmental ambassador. With PAF program initiatives seeded in key locations around the world, the core mission focuses on using timeless, universal ecological principles applicable to all natural ecosystems in addition to location-specific subjects, and applying these principles to engage local communities toward stewardship and restoration efforts of their marine environment. The lessons participants learn about nature and sustainable living are relevant everywhere in the world. Our ultimate goal is to have PAF participants plant one billion "fish" worldwide.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
The Blue Frontier Campaign
The Blue Frontier Campaign works to promote unity, provide tools to and raise awareness of the solution-oriented marine conservation community.
The Blue Frontier Campaign has produced dozens of print, radio and television reports on America's last great wilderness range: Its imperiled living seas. Along with addressing the latest controversies surrounding beach closures, collapsing fish stocks, killer algae, hurricanes and oil spills, the campaign seeks solutions, It does this by educating the public about a "seaweed rebellion" of coastal citizen-activists, local governments, and waterfront communities who are working to protect and restore the sea's health and our own.
The Campaign also provides public speakers to the nations leading aquariums, to journalism and science conferences, on college campuses and to maritime and ocean activist organizations.
If you'd like to have a speaker address your group you can arrange it through the Blue Frontier Campaign, (202) 387-8030 or Helvarg@bluefront.org
