Care for Creation: A Franciscan Spirituality of the Earth

We can no longer see ourselves as separate from the 'great chain of being,' and we can no longer see this as a non-religious issue. "Earth, with all its creatures, is in crisis. And responding to this crisis will require every possible resource of our human community.

FYI

Genesis To Jesus by Kimberly Hahn & Michael Barber

Genesis to Jesus opens the door to deeper understanding of Scripture for all Catholics, especially those who find reading the Bible a daunting task. The book leads the reader on an overview of salvation history in order to give the "big picture," the single plot that runs through the books of the Bible.

What is that overarching story? God's plan to bring all humanity into his covenant family. This overview of key covenants from creation to the New Covenant established by Jesus not only helps the reader see how various biblical stories fit together in God's plan, it also provides a foundation for ongoing Bible study.

Genesis to Jesus is the first in a series of study guides produced by The St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology, based in Steubenville, Ohio. The Center, founded in 2000, develops materials to help Catholics deepen their faith through Scripture study.

What is a Dog? The Monks of New Skete

The MONKS OF NEW SKETE are best known in the world at large for their breeding and training of German Shepherds as companions and guide dogs in upper New York state. These magnificent animals are called THE NEW SKETE DOGS. Their German Shepherds can be found all across the globe.

They have worked hard to develop their unique approach to canine training and they have acquired an excellent reputation. The Brothers advocate the philosophy that "understanding is the key to communication, compassion, and communion" with your dog. There is a tone in their work to the natural fundamentals which is the basis of the harmony that dog and human enjoy. MEET THE DOG TRAINING MONKS. The Brothers consider their dogs more than a source of money, they see each dog as a reflection on their community. Each dog has a trainer and the dog becomes involved in the elements of the monastic rhythm of life. The Brothers feel that the quiet harmony of the monastery surroundings enhances the humans and dogs to learn better. The Monks of New Skete have written several dog-training manuals, including The Art of Raising a Puppy and How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend: The Classic Training Manual for Dog Owners.

As a monastic community, the Monks of New Skete live with the conviction that an authentic and vibrant monasticism is an essential ingredient to healthy Church life. By nature, the monastic vocation is contemplative and apostolic, challenging both the Church and the world at large to fuller life; therefore, they see their primary responsibility as being authentic monastics.

Anchored in a daily cycle of matins and vespers (with Divine Liturgy on Sundays and feast days), they try to make themselves available to all who come to the monastery, in a manner that is in keeping with their vocation.

Many people visit the monastery each year as dog customers. Not only do they offer a breeding program, but they conduct a 3-week obedience training program for all breeds of dogs.

Friar Jack Wintz talks about WILL I SEE MY DOG IN HEAVEN?

A Universal Question, thoughtfully answered!

What do you think: Will we see our dogs and cats in the hereafter? Does God's plan for eternity include the created nonhuman world? Franciscan friar and popular writer Father Jack Wintz brings a love for all creation and infectious enthusiasm to the serious task of exploring answers to these long-asked questions,

In his book Will I See My Dog in Heaven? Father Jack admits that no one really knows what God has in mind for us in the next life. But in ten thoughtful chapters, he lines up evidence from the Scriptures, Christian tradition and liturgy, and the life and teachings of St. Francis of Assisi, that God desires all creatures (yes, including our beloved pets!) in the afterlife.

Saint Francis of Assisi: Celebrating Creation

~by Susi Pittman

I am forever in love with Saint Francis of Assisi. His life speaks more spiritually to me today than any other person. His teachings are more relative...even more so today than perhaps the time he lived in. In getting to know Francis so well, there is a Franciscan Friar who wrote the masterpiece that changed my life. You must meet him.

THE ART OF LIFE

Beth Shady and her Seaweed Art

seaweedart.com

I believe that nature and art meet when the variety of seaweed's colors, shapes and textures naturally lend themselves to artistic expression. SeaweedArt is a gift from the sea.

My name is Beth Shady and I am a nature artist. I create art using raw materials I find in nature- like seaweed, which is my favorite medium.

I live in Santa Cruz, CA with my seafaring, surfer husband Bill and our five kids.

Our quaint, beach community is celebrated for its temperate climate, pristine beaches, rocky shores and surfing.

I created this blog a few years ago to write about the joy and pleasure I experience living by the beach. I moved here from the East coast almost 20 years ago and I am still in awe of the natural beauty that surrounds me. I want to share my love of the sea with you.

All of the seaweed used in my SeaweedArt cards has been sustainably harvested from the Monterey Bay in accordance with the regulations for seaweed harvesting along the West Coast of North America.
