Audrey and Eldad Hagar have been fostering hundreds of animals in their home for the past eight years. They created Hope for Paws to help animals in this country who suffer and die every year because of negligence and abuse. They also created a huge network of rescuers from all over the world on their Facebook pages.

Our fostered animals are a part of our family and are treated as such. Too often, people undervalue their furry family members and abandon them in their backyards, on the streets or at the shelters. These animals die from starvation, abuse, and euthanization because of the overcrowding at the shelters.

Pets are not items that can be thrown away or exchanged for younger models. Animals are sentient beings who feel pain, love, joy, mourning, and loss. These valuable creatures help us whether it is assisting the blind or finding people under the rubble from an earthquake. They help us in times of war and during human catastrophes.

We want to help both humans and animals alike live harmonious and fulfilling lives together.

Alan S. Hochman

Alan Hochman was born in the Brighton Beach area of Brooklyn, New York, and grew up with a fascination for the beach and ocean. Attending a summer youth camp in upstate New York introduced him to the magnificent sights that nature provides. It was there in learning about the flora and fauna of the area, that he found the impetus that shaped his life.

He earned a Master's Degree in both Biology and Psychology and found himself moving to southern Florida for a new direction in his career. Currently, he is a profiler and graphics coordinator for a major online website, but at every opportunity he can be found somewhere traipsing about in the Everglades in Florida with his Nikon D90.

It has been through his work in biology, with camera in hand that Alan shares the magnificent beauty of the natural world he loves so much.

Kacie Ehrenberger will use her TOGETHERGREEN fellowship to work with educators and youth at Hemphill Middle School in Strasburg, Colorado, a small rural school with an interest in getting their students' outdoor experiences tied to their curriculum. She will work with students and teachers to develop and pilot an online grasslands education module for 4th-8th grade. The module will highlight the grasslands of Colorado, its importance for agriculture and wildlife, and challenges facing grasslands. She hopes that local landowners and resource managers will interact with students and teachers through field trips that showcase local examples of integrating the needs of agricultural producers and bird populations.

The International Rose Test Garden in Portland  

Founded in 1917, Portland's International Rose Test Garden is the oldest official, continuously operated public rose test garden in the United States. In the beginning, even though World War I was raging in Europe, hybridists sent roses from around the world to Portland's garden for testing and to keep the new hybrids safe from being destroyed by the bombing in Europe.
