The Nebraska National Forest
The Nebraska National Forest, which was developed in the Great Plains following the "dust bowl" era, came to be one of the short-lived successful tree-planting projects in the United States. On May 5, 1965, lightening started a prairie fire that destroyed eleven thousand acres of planted forest.

THE GOOD NEWS
Please HELP REPLANT our National Forests
www.arborday.org
National Arbor Day is Friday, April 27. It's a time to celebrate the wonders of nature, and to plan for an even greener future by planting and caring for trees.
J. Sterling Morton is the recognized founder of the Arbor Day tradition. He and his wife had left Detroit, Michigan, and moved to Nebraska where they established beautiful new surrounds of planted trees, shrubs and flowers. Nebraska at the time was devoid of much plant life, save the wide open plains. As the successful editor of Nebraska's first newspaper, his popularity grew among the populous as well as the general census that more trees in Nebraska would be great for all. Morton became the secretary of the Nebraska Territory and he saw the FIRST Arbor Day April 10, 1872, when 1 million trees were planted in Nebraska.
Today Arbor Day is recognized as a National Day and has moved into the global community with either National Tree Planting Days or Arbor Days taking place basically in the spring months.
Need some great tips on how to CELEBRATE Arbor Day in your community...check out THIS GREAT PAGE from the Arbor Day Foundation!

CATHOLIC JOURNEYMAN
We WELCOME this week, our newest CSC columnist, Louis Templeman, founder of Take Root Devotions. Lou is a Catholic convert and a marvelous writer with his own brand of humor! In his debut column, Lou exhorts us to "Never trust anyone without a limp."
Never Trust Anyone Without a Limp

An old friend of mine says, "Never trust anyone who hasn't been to prison. But, a more appealing adage might be, "Never trust anyone without a limp." This would include everyone who has been tormented by pain, disappointment and those periods of darkness which often precede conversion.
When Jacob was born he was called the "heel gripper"; one who trips people up. He was a deceiver. This name played out in his life as he proved to be a clever schemer. At a difficult point in his life an angel of God met him. Jacob wrestled with God through his long, dark night and came away a changed man. He limped away from divine wrestling an honest man, a trustworthy father and leader of God's people. He could be trusted only after he started limping.
When my friend Bill first began work on a carpentry crew he boasted of his prowess with a power saw and of his skill as a carpenter. The seasoned journeyman who he was assigned to grinned and asked for his hands. Bill extended his hands and the gruff carpenter looked at them, turning them over to examine the palms and the back of his hands. He looked at the other crew members and said, "Ain't they pretty!" Bill may have held a saw in his hands before, but not enough to get scars or develop calluses. In his fear of being rejected on his first day at work he set himself up. It wasn't words he needed. Only scars could testify to his skill.
When Jesus made a post-resurrection appearance to Thomas, he had to show his scars to bring Thomas to faith. Once Thomas saw the scars, Thomas believed.
Our scars prompt us to appeal to the scars of Jesus. We bring our wounds to his. By his stripes we are healed. By the blood of his wounds we are cleansed. By faith and by prayer we learn to hide in his wounds, to be drawn to his scars, to allow our scars to be healing opportunities for ourselves and for others. As Jacob could not lead until he limped, as Peter could not lead the infant Church until he let down our crucified Lord, so we cannot be entrusted with God's grace until we come to terms with our own limp; our own scars; our own humanity.
Most of us think our scars are ugly. We try to hide them if we can. However, in life, particularly our life of faith, it is often our scars that prove our point. Our scars mark the time and place where we become transformers or transmitters. If our sorrows do not transform us we will transmit our sorrows. This is where our life story, our testimony, is created.
When someone is crippled, or divorced, or orphaned, or imprisoned, or sick, or struggling with addictions or other difficulties and yet finds comfort and grace in the Spirit of Christ then, this one has a testimony. Sometimes, you have to be like Jesus and reveal your scars. It is hard to trust someone who doesn't limp.

Louis Templeman is a husband and the father of five adult daughters. He and Deborah have been married for 31 years. He has an M. A. in Biblical Studies from Regent University in Virginia Beach. He has been a Foursquare pastor, a social worker, a painter and professional writer. He is a member of the Catholic Writers Guild, Jacksonville, Florida. He is an adult convert to the Catholic faith and is the editor of Take Root Devotions.

THIS WEEK'S COMMENTARY
Remembering Robert H. Mealey, Mr. Ponderosa (1910-2007)
Why does an old man plant a tree?
My friends quite often ask of me, Why does an old man plant a tree? It grows so slow it will not pay, A profit for him anyway. Then why in storm and winter cold, Do you plant a tree when you're so old? . The answer seems hard to define, When muscles ache and they are mine! But I just cannot stand to see, A place where there should be a tree. So that in part as years unfold, Is why I plant when I'm so old. . I know that animals, bugs and things, Love trees and so do such as go on wings. So creatures wild that benefit, Is one more reason I can't quit, From planting trees while I can hold, My planting hoe though I'm so old. . They say that those retired from labor, Should fish and play and talk to neighbor. They say also that folks in leisure, Should do the things that give them pleasure. And so the thought on which I'm sold, I'll plant a tree though I'm so old. . As times goes on my trees will grow, So tall and clean and row on row. The furry folk will have a home. The birds can nest and kids can roam. And all of this as I have told, I planted trees though I'm so old. . And then there is my family, Young folks who will follow me. I'd like to leave them with some land, Stocked with trees and looking grand. These gifts I value more than gold, So I'll plant a tree though I'm so old. . And taxes too for schools and roads, With jobs and lumber for abodes. I won't see these things, I won't be here, But in my mind it's very clear. The words of some who could be polled, Might thank a man who is so old. . Man should be proud of what's his own, And how he's managed what he's grown. But management must be begun, By planting seedlings one by one. And so my pride I shall uphold, I'll plant some trees though I'm so old. . So when my friends ask of me, What does an old man plant a tree? Perhaps the lines above explain, How aching back and limbs in pain, May by commitment be controlled, To plant a tree though I'm so old.

THE ART OF LIFE
Katie Schmid
www.katieschmid.com
Katie Schmid earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts, Cum Laude from Laguna College of Art and Design in Laguna Beach, California in 2007.
Although a Naturalist in her approach, her work touches upon both symbolism and realistic aspects of life. In the many significant art periods Katie has learned from, the High Renaissance has left the deepest impression. She values and studies these masters and speakers in painterly forms. She aspires for the same poetry and vigor in her visual renderings. Michelangelo, Francisco Zurbaran, and Abbott Thayer are among a few of her noteworthy inspirations. Her work embodies the understanding of sacred truths and the humble representation of true beauty. In her sight communion with the viewer, she hopes for transcendent images that speak of the very depths of our existence.
Katie's work can be found in public and private collections across the United States and Europe. Notably, Katie has a permanent collection at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Center, Purdue University; Regis University; and the Papal Household, Vatican City. She works from her studio in Southern California and also teaches private art lessons.

St. Vincent's Academy Feeds the Hungry in Savannah
Savannah Morning News St. Vincent's Academy in the Diocese of Savannah planted an urban garden to feed the hungry in the Savannah area. The students at the all girls school grew the garden from seed beginning at the start of the 2011-2012 school year, seeing to fruition the production of an abundance of garden vegetables. Always paramount in their minds was "the knowing" that their hard work would benefit those in need. They recently made their first delivery on Tuesday, March 27th to the Social Apostolate in the diocese. The apostolate serves over 100 meals each day. A grant from the Georgia Independent School Association for Innovative Learning was instrumental in financing the gardening endeavor of the academy. |
