THE GOOD NEWS
DOGS FOR THE DEAF

www.dogsforthedeaf.org
The Mission Statement for DOGS FOR THE DEAF says, they seek to rescue and professionally train dogs to help people and enhance lives, maintaining a lifelong commitment to all dogs we rescue and all people we serve.
Dogs for the Deaf was founded in 1977 by the late Roy G. Kabat, an animal trainer for stage and screen. After retiring to the Applegate Valley in southern Oregon, he was contacted by the American Humane Association about a deaf women in Minnesota who had a dog that had trained itself to let her know when things were going on. It was in this chance connection that Roy found his mission in creating
Dogs for the Deaf.
The standard of excellence in training and placing these dogs exceeds Assistance Dogs International standards.
Every dog has value, and all people should have the opportunity to feel safe and independent regardless of their physical or sensory challenges. To that end, each dog that comes to Dogs for the Deaf meets basic characteristics needed for helping people with a variety of needs. Dogs for the Deaf is responsive to the changing needs and challenges of both the clients and their dogs and commits on-going support for the life of every dog/person partnership they form. The needs and abilities of applicants and dogs are carefully matched and tracked to assure they receive maximum benefit from each other.
Their mission goes beyond just dogs for the deaf and offers Autism Assistance Dogs, Program Assistance Dogs and Miracle Mutts. Their dogs have been credited with:
- Alerting a woman to a fire in her kitchen
- Alerting parents to a heart monitor beeping because their infant stopped breathing
- Giving a severely depressed man a reason to live
- Helping a stroke victim recover by making exercise and rehabilitation more fun
- Enabling a physician for children with autism to treat her patients more easily and without restraint
- Lessening a trauma victim's panic and anxiety attacks
Susi Pittman, founder of CatholicStewardsofCreation.com, had experienced a total hearing loss in the summer of 2010. It was then that she explored the assistance that was available to her and at that time that found DOGS FOR THE DEAF. Her own pet Dalmatian responded uniquely to her disability at the time, taking it upon himself to alerting her to sounds she could no longer hear. Her partial hearing was restored later that year, but, she will never forget the comfort of knowing that DOGS FOR THE DEAF was a viable option for the future quality of life in deafness.
We SALUTE the devoted folks at DOGS FOR THE DEAF as they continue to make a difference in the lives of so many!
