THE GOOD NEWS

HAPPY THANKSGIVING:

LET'S TALK TURKEY!

Thanksgiving is a time for family and friends to come together and give thanks. The centerpiece of most Thanksgiving dinners is a turkey, surrounded by home cooked, delicious vegetables, dressings, condiments and pies. However, the traditional turkey is different today than it was 50 years ago. Today 99% of all turkeys raised in the U.S. are what is called the "broadbreasted white." These turkeys are raised in factory farms, America's "sad secret." According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, without artificial insemination performed by humans, this variety of bird would become extinct in just one generation.

Industrial turkeys are often injected with antibiotics saline solution and vegetable oils in an attempt to help improve the taste and texture of the meat. These factory farmed birds tend to be dry and tasteless, so cooks have developed a variety of methods to try to improve the taste. Turkeys are now marinated, brined, deep fried and covered with syrups, spices and herbs.

SO HERE IS OUR PROPOSAL:

Just as the family chooses the season's Christmas Tree, why not go on the hunt for a HERITAGE TURKEY or an ORGANIC TURKEY.? These are turkeys that have no antibiotics, no growth enhancers, only organic feed, and the animals must be given access to outdoors. These turkeys are raised by farmers who treat their animals humanely. They can be found easily at specialty shops and farmers markets around the country. There has been a movement to reintroduce genetically diversified (NOT genetically modified) varieties of turkeys whose origins are in this country, back to the public. Be a part of something very special that one day could be a mainstream practice.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"For the Truth the Turkey is in Comparison a much more respectable Bird, and withal a true original Native of America... He is besides, though a little vain & silly, a Bird of Courage, and would not hesitate to attack a Grenadier of the British Guards who should presume to invade his Farm Yard with a red Coat on."

Mark Keathley

http://markkeathley.com

Mark Keathley (born 1963) grew up on the family farm in East Texas and loved romping through the woods and across open fields. He spent most of his spare time outside chasing lizards, and trying to catch that illusive grand-daddy large mouth bass. It was here, in this environment, where he first spied his mother's oil painting box in the attic of his country home. "I want my paintings to inspire people to be still, to listen to that quiet voice, and then rise up assured that they are a part of something bigger than their schedule." Mark's paintings do just that!

The National Wildlife Federation:

Turkey Terrorist

There are those of us who live in areas that see their share of wild turkey invasions. It could be just a mated-pair or a whole flock. The encroachment of suburbia into more rural areas is being introduced to turkey populations that frequent the terrain. Encounters can be nice and sometimes they can take a turn for the worse...."turkey terrorism!"

So what to do, if you find yourself in the midst of an aggressive wild turkey?
