In the midst of those wonders we discover the voice of the Creator, transmitted by heaven and earth, day and night: a language "without words whose sound is heard," capable of crossing all frontiers. ~ Blessed John Paul II

THE GOOD NEWS
Rails to Trails
www.railstotrails.org
What IF, in the history of conservation and environmental action, a plan so simple, so incredibly innovative and one that would change the face of the American landscape for good was right under our noses? A plan that would support land conservation, wildlife habitats, recycling and historical preservation all at the same time!
IF is a REALITY! It is called RAILS TO TRAILS, fast becoming the national initiative for creating a national trails system.
It is the concept of taking unused railroad corridors and turning them into urban, suburban and rural American biking, hiking, walking, cross-country skiing, equestrian and handicap accessible pathways for the enjoyment of the American public.
Part of the RAILS TO TRAILS program includes RAIL WITH TRAIL, which is actually public pathways that run alongside active railway corridors. There are currently 115 of these in the country today.
The RAILS TO TRAILS program now boasts 15,000 miles of rails to trails with over 100 million users and is growing.
It is the mission of the Conservancy to work with railroad companies and state and local governments to create these wonderful by-ways. They have proven to be economically stimulating to the cities and communities that have them, not to mention creating healthier places for people to get out and enjoy an active lifestyle and improve their own health.
There is at least one trail in every state in the U.S. At the present more than 1,100 are in the works. A great way to find one near you is through TrailLink.com
Please consider DONATING to the RAILS TO TRAILS CONSERVANCY helping them continue the success of this monumental conservation effort.
