Prayer for Life

O God, our Creator, all life is in your hands from conception until death. Help us to cherish our children and to reverence the awesome privilege of our share in creation. May all people live and die in dignity and love. Bless all those who defend the rights of the unborn, the handicapped and the aged. Enlighten and be merciful toward those who fail to love, and give them peace. Let freedom be tempered by responsibility, integrity and morality.

The Good News

HOUSE RABBIT SOCIETY NATIONAL WEBSITE

www.rabbit.org

This week we look at a very unique niche rescue group that addresses the needs of pet rabbits.

House Rabbit Society was founded in 1988 and is located in Richmond, California and is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization which recognized two important elements that would be the cornerstones of their mission, that people needed to be educated about the needs of real rabbits, and that there were rabbits in shelters in need of good homes. They look at rescuing rabbits and finding permanent homes for them. They also assist humane societies through publications on rabbit care, phone consultation and classes.

They have foster volunteers who bring abandoned rabbits into their own homes until permanent homes can be found. They look for indoor homes for their rabbits, so that they will enjoy lives that are both safe and social.

In the 20+ years since their founding, the House Rabbit Society has expanded to form a network of thousands of members and hundreds of licensed volunteers across the United States, Canada, Australia, Europe, and Asia.

The House Rabbit Society opened the first public rabbit-only shelter in the country in Richmond, California, which serves as a model for animal shelters around the world. HRS volunteers are internationally recognized for their expertise in rabbit behavior and care, and are called upon regularly to give educational seminars at venues around the world.

Absolutely a wonderful organization that addresses some of the most beautiful, intelligent and gentle creatures on the planet! Stewardship KUDOS!

Celebrity Guest Columnist

Phyllis O'Beollain, The Dayton Examiner

Phyllis is a personal friend and one who has been a wonderful resource for our readers on bunny life and behavior. We asked her to update us on her new rabbit, "Guillermo," and her other rabbit family members.

"G" Finds His Way

~by Phyllis O'Beollain

Readers may recall Guillermo-the-growling-rabbit, a neutered black and white mini-lop who changed from a lovable (if mischievous) rabbit into an angry, biting rabbit after being returned from an eight-month adoption. "It just didn't work out with the kids" was the only explanation given. A few weeks on Bach's Rescue Remedy drops stopped the biting, but his growling, charging, and cage rattling continued. After nearly six months of love, patience and giving him his space, no further improvement was noted in his behavior.

Stargazing

Lepus the Hare Constellation

Lepus, the Rabbit, is visible in the northern hemisphere in winter. It is located just below Orion and west of Canis Major and Minor. The rabbit is being hunted by Orion and his two hunting dogs, Canis Major and Canis Minor. Be careful not to confuse Lepus with another constellation Lupus, the wolf. The mythology of Lepus is uncertain. It is, however, an ancient constellation known at least since the time of the Greeks. It contains one Messier object, M79, which is a globular cluster located about 40,000 light-years from Earth.
