Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary

www.seabirdsanctuary.com

Located on the west coast of Florida in Indian Shores, is the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary, which is the largest wild bird hospital and bird sanctuary in the United States, based on the admission of up to 8,000 birds per year. For over 38 years, the Sanctuary has helped injured wild birds. The Sanctuary is open 365 days a year to the public from 9AM until sunset and admission is free. Visitors can view in excess of 600 birds of varying species which are rescued, repaired and rehabilitated for a release back into the wild.

Founded in 1971 by zoologist Ralph T. Heath, the Sanctuary is world renowned for its innovative rehabilitation techniques, and was the first facility to breed Eastern Brown Pelicans in captivity. The Sanctuary is staffed by experienced professionals and dedicated volunteers. Similar to a human hospital, it is equipped with emergency facilities, a surgical center, bird injury recovery areas, and an outdoor wild bird recuperation area.

What a beautiful mission and one that needs our support. The Sanctuary is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation which depends solely on the financial support of caring individuals.

Proper Feeding of Our Visiting Backyard Feathered Friends

This week our column has gone to the birds! Especially at this time of year when we see so many migratory species in our backyards. So, we thought it a good idea to address the proper feeding of our visiting backyard feathered friends. Not every bird likes the same seed, fruit or nectar. And you have ground feeders, tree feeders and those that will come to a set feeder. Whichever species is visiting you, here are some great links to be the perfect dinner host as you fill the beaks of your bird friends at your next bird feeding banquet.

Stargazing

The Southern Celestial Pole

The "Apus the Bird of Paradise" and "Volans the Flying Fish" constellations are two constellations we will never see here in the northern hemisphere. Both are known as circumpolar and only move about the southern sky above the southern pole of the earth. These constellations helped European navigators of old in their explorations of southern Africa and its waters. It was Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Friederick de Houtman who discovered both constellations in the sixteenth century.
