BUD'S BARKS!

I am fascinated with the fact that my human family finds a
mirror fascinating. Don't they know who is staring back at them? I think not,
as they set about altering their faces into someone they recognize. No worry
for me, it just leaves me more time to sneak downstairs and steal a few bites
of the cat's food.

Greetings!
Marie Matte is our CELEBRITY GUEST COLUMNIST this week, and
she is a friend of mine. Her work in establishing and maintaining an equine sanctuary in our part of the country has been nothing short of phenomenal. Florida is a national
breeding and racing ground for the thoroughbred and quarter horse racing
industries and there are plenty of discards. In too many places, horses are
looked upon as a commodity or living chattel. I am so grateful to her for
giving horses a second chance in such a loving and peaceful environment. If
you've ever loved horses, you do not want to miss her column this week!
Peace, Susi

Welcome, Advent!
The Evening Prayer I of Sunday, November
29th began the season of Advent for all Catholics world wide. These next four
weeks of Advent, Catholics will be preparing for Christmas, remembering the
birth of our savior, Jesus Christ and also being mindful that we await His
Second Coming at the end of time. Advent ends with the celebration of Evening
Prayer I of Christmas and the Christmas Vigil Mass.
In the sanctuary during this time is the Advent Wreath.
The symbolism of the wreath is beautiful. It is made of evergreens signifying
the continuation of life both here and beyond.
The circle of the wreath which has no
beginning or end, symbolizes the eternity of God, the immortality of the soul,
and the everlasting life found in Christ. The four candles
represent the four weeks of Advent. There are three purple candles symbolizing
prayer, penance, sacrifices and goods works undertaken at this time. The one
rose colored candle is lit on Gaudete Sunday, or the Sunday of rejoicing as the
faithful are at the midway point to Christmas in the Advent
journey.
The wreath is a holy reminder as the faithful
move closer to Christmas of what the true meaning of Christmas really is, the
birth of the Savior of All the world, the Lord Jesus
Christ!

Feast of Saint Nicholas
The Catholic Church recognizes December 6th as
the Feast Day of Saint Nicholas. But, who was this Nicholas?
Saint Nicholas lived in the fourth century, having been born
in a province of Asia
minor, Patara in Lycia.
His parents died when he was a young man and left him financially well off. He
vowed to devote his inheritance to works of charity. One infamous story was how
Saint Nicholas helped the father of three daughters who had lost all of his
money and being destitute was preparing to give his daughters over to
prostitution. Saint Nicholas stepped in and made dowrys for all three girls,
whose chastity was saved and were all duly married in time.
The legend of the three daughters gave rise to his patronage
of children. It was in Germany,
Switzerland and the Netherlands
that the giving of presents in his name at Christmas time was begun.
Over the centuries, this great saint's legacy moved from the
religious into the secular world as Saint Nicholas became Father Christmas and
of course Santa Claus, the bearer of gifts to children everywhere.
The Catholic Church recognizes Saint Nicholas as the Bishop
of Myra, who led an extraordinary life of piety and zeal and was known for man
astonishing miracles.
