New Talent at NEMWI: Water Resources and Environmental Specialist

NEMWI welcomes Senior Policy Associate Erik Hagen, P.E., to the team.  As a full-time contractor to NEMWI, Mr. Hagen will be covering issues related to the Delaware River Basin and other East Coast river basins, Great Lakes river mouths, and shale gas development.  Collaborative planning in water resources has been a focus of Mr. Hagen's education and career.  He has a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering with a focus in Environmental Engineering, and a Master's Degree in Water Resources Planning and Management from the University of Washington.  He worked at the Water Management Section of the City of Seattle before moving to Washington D.C., where he worked for ten years doing water resources planning and management at the the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin (ICPRB).  While at the ICPRB, Mr. Hagen coordinated water operations of the three major water suppliers in the Washington metropolitan area, and conducted regional planning studies to assure the future of Washington's water supply.  In his spare time, he integrates scientific perspectives into his artwork.

For more information, contact Erik Hagen, Senior Policy Associate at the Northeast-Midwest Institute.

Department of Transportation Releases FY12 TIGER Grants

Last Friday, DOT released $500 million in funding for the FY12 Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) Discretionary Grants.  TIGER grants aim to spur a national competition for innovative road, rail, transit and port projects that promise significant economic and environmental benefits to an entire metropolitan area, a region, or the nation.  Each project is multi-modal, multi-jurisdictional or otherwise challenging to fund through existing programs.  In the latest round of grants, 43% of the awarded projects are in the NEMW region, equaling 39% of the total funding.  DOT's release is available here.

For more information, contact Kate Ostrander or Mike Gaffin, Legislative Directors of the Northeast-Midwest Congressional and Senate Coalitions, respectively.

USDA Rural Business Opportunity Grant Open

The USDA Rural Business Opportunity Grant (RBOG) is open; applications are due August 6. The primary objective of the RBOG program is to promote sustainable economic development in rural communities with exceptional needs. Grants are awarded on a competitive basis. Though grant awards are limited to $50,000 increments out of a total pool of $2.37 million, that amount can still go far and have a large impact for a rural community. Eligible entities include: public entities; nonprofit corporations; Indian tribes; institutions of higher education; and rural cooperatives.  More information and instruction on applying is available here.

For more information, contact Colin Wellenkamp, Director, Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative at the Northeast-Midwest Institute.
