NEMWI Releases "The President's FY2013 Budget and the Region"

NEMWI and the bipartisan Northeast-Midwest Congressional Coalition produced a rapid review of the President's FY2013 budget to inform the Northeast-Midwest Congressional and Senate Coalitions, states, and other regional partners of the budget's implications for the Northeast-Midwest (NEMW) region. The full report, a Northeast-Midwest Institute Note to the Coalitions, entitled "The President's FY2013 Budget and the Region," describes, by Congressional Appropriations Committee jurisdiction, prominent features of the Administration's FY2013 budget evident on the day of budget release (February 13, 2012) and relevant to the NEMW region. NEMWI and the NEMW Congressional Coalition will issue a second more comprehensive Note to the Coalitions incorporating detail on other smaller but still regionally important programs in the President's FY2013 budget once agencies release their programmatic details (usually within two-three weeks of the release of the President's budget).  NEMWI also posted an up-to-date table of available Appropriations Levels (FY2010-12) and Request Levels (FY2013) for more than 70 programs of importance to the NEMW region on the NEMWI website.

Sen. Sherrod Brown Proposes $1.8 Billion for Sewer Infrastructure

Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Co-Chair of the Northeast-Midwest Senate Coalition, yesterday reintroduced the "Clean Water Affordability Act" which would create a $1.8 billion grant program for communities to update their old sewer infrastructure.  It would also make it easier for communities to reopen existing consent decrees with U.S. EPA to add green infrastructure to their plans.  The EPA estimates that $63 billion of upgrades are required across the U.S., an expense of critical concern to the Northeast-Midwest region and its aging water infrastructure.  Read more at E&E.
