NEMW Congressional Coalition and House Manufacturing Task Force Host Briefing on Trade Adjustment Assistance for Firms

The NEMW Congressional Coalition and House Manufacturing Task Force today hosted an informational briefing on the Trade Adjustment Assistance for Firms (TAAF) Program and the service delivery model of Trade Adjustment Assistance Centers (TAAC).  Panelists discussed how TAAF works and has aided U.S. businesses; the status of TAAF re-authorization and appropriations; and the impact of Free Trade Agreements on TAAF.  The event took place from 12-1pm in B-339, Rayburn House Office Building. For information about speakers, read the full press release.

U.S. Geological Survey Steps up Resources to Control Invasive Sea Lamprey in the Great Lakes

Two new ships may soon help to cull the sea lamprey population, an invasive species of parasite fish now established in the Great Lakes.  The U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) Great Lakes Science Center plans to add these new vessels--one on Lake Erie and one on Lake Ontario--because they are faster, travel farther, and have more precise sampling equipment.  The ships are being built at the Great Lakes Towing Company in Cleveland, Ohio.  For more detail, see the full article in the Great Lakes Echo.  The Northeast-Midwest Institute's Great Lakes Washington Program works with the bi-partisan Congressional Task Forces and the USGS to track research and sound science that effects fishery management decision-making in the Great Lakes, among other issue areas.

Capacity Building for Sustainable Communities Program

According to their June 14th press release, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will join forces to competitively award $5.65 million to strengthen the capacity of existing sustainable communities grantees to create more housing choices, make transportation more efficient and reliable, and support vibrant and healthy neighborhoods for American families.  The award program will build upon the Partnership for Sustainable Communities, an innovative interagency collaboration, launched by President Obama in June 2009, between the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), HUD and EPA.  Nonprofit organizations, local or state public agencies, for-profit organizations, nationally recognized and accredited Universities or Colleges, or any combination of eligible entities as a Capacity Building Team are eligible to apply for funding. Applications are due July 8, 2011.  For more information on how to apply, review the notice of funding availability (NOFA) here.

Collaboration and Leadership in Smaller Industrial Cities Forum

The Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, along with the Mosakowski Institute for Public Enterprise, MassINC, and the Rappaport Institute for Greater Boston, is hosting a forum to explore and share practical examples on smaller industrial cities.  The forum will address the following questions:

  • Why are these cities important to the New England economy?
  • What is their comparative advantage and how do we position them to attract capital?
  • How do we engage diverse audiences in creating economic prosperity for all?
  • What tools are practitioners using to operate in a resource-constrained environment and to improve performance management systems?
  • How can we harness the business community to support revitalization efforts and increase innovation?

The event takes place on Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at Tilton Hall, Clark University
950 Main Street Worcester, MA 01610.  It begins at 8:30 am and ends at 4:00 pm.  For more information, visit the event website
