The Northeast-Midwest Institute Capitol Hill briefing: "No Getting Around It: Getting More from Our Transportation System in the Northeast and Midwest" took place on June 8. The event was well-attended by both Senate and House staffers from the region, as well as members of labor unions and other organizations with an interest in transportation performance measures. Great Lakes Task Force Circulating Appropriations Letter
|
A draft Senate Great Lakes Task Force letter, addressed to the Senate Commerce, Justice, and Science Appropriations Subcommittee, is currently circulating for signatures. The draft letter expresses support for a program run by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that benefits the Great Lakes ecosystem, specifically the National Coastal Zone Management Program grants. Coastal Zone Management Plan grants provide funding for the preservation, protection, restoration, and enhancement of coastal zone areas along the Great Lakes. The deadline for signatures is June 17.

EPA Releases $76 Million in Brownfield Grants
|
One legacy of industry in the Northeast and Midwest is a problem with contaminated land. Last week, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released $76 million in grants to clean up contaminated brownfield sites in communities throughout 40 states and 3 tribes. This round of funding issued 214 grants--many of them in the Northeast-Midwest region--through the Brownfields Assessment, Revolving Loan Fund, and Cleanup Grants programs. Foreign Trade Zones Briefing: U.S. Competitiveness, Manufacturing Jobs, and Exports

The House Manufacturing Caucus is holding a briefing on Foreign Trade Zones, a topic of keen interest to the Northeast-Midwest region. The briefing will take place Thursday, June 16th at 11:30am in 121 Cannon HOB. Foreign Trade Zones (FTZs) were created in the United States to provide special U.S. Customs and Border Protection procedures to U.S. firms engaged in trade-related activities. These procedures were designed to encourage manufacturing in the domestic industry. The hearing is geared towards Hill staff but all are free to register. Featured speakers include:

- Brandi Hanback, Managing Director at The Rockefeller Group - "Benefits of the FTZ Program"
