| Senator Levin Speaks at Great Lakes Day Breakfast | On Wednesday, March 2, 2011, Senator Carl Levin, Co-Chair of the Senate Great Lakes Task Force, spoke to a roomful of enthusiastic Great Lakes regional advocates at a breakfast reception hosted by the Northeast-Midwest Institute and the Great Lakes Commission. His remarks focused on the need to remove tax breaks for the wealthy to support vital public programs like the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. He also noted the need for a single federal standard for ship discharges of live organisms to effectively stop new ship-mediated introductions of aquatic invasive species. Senator Levin called on states to exercise restraint in standard-setting to enable a single federal standard to work. Other speakers included James M. Tierney (Commission Chair), Assistant Commissioner, Div. of Water Resources of the NY State Dept. of Environmental Conservation, and Allegra Cangelosi, President, Northeast-Midwest Institute.
