Educators Get First Hand Look at Industry

On June 11th - 14th the Bay County Chamber of Commerce and Bay District Schools Career and Technical Education hosted the second annual Educators in Industry.
Educators in Industry was created in 2011 to offer teachers and counselors the opportunity to step out of the classroom and into the workplace in order to discover first hand about what their students need to know. "The purpose of this program is to show them the different opportunities out there for students," said Elizabeth Smith, the program's coordinator. "We want them to know there are jobs here for young people in Bay County. Guidance counselors don't always know what career opportunities are here. Now they will be able to go back to the classroom and really know what is needed in the workforce."
With the help of our sponsor, Centennial Bank, educators spent four days learning more about local industries and businesses in Bay County as well as the scope and variety of career opportunities that exist, the connection between the workplace and what is being learned in school, the training and education required for specific career paths and skills necessary to be successful in the workplace. Participants visited Eastern Shipbuilding, Port Panama City, The Natural Light, Panama City Toyota, WMBB News 13, The News Herald, Gulf Coast Medical Center, HealthSouth, Naval Support Activity, Naval Systems Warfare Center, GAC Contracting and Edgewater Beach and Golf Resort.
Thank you again to Centennial Bank for sponsoring this event.

Leadership Bay Accepting Applications
The Leadership Bay Steering Committee under the chairmanship of Tricia Culpepper Petty, is accepting applications for the Leadership Bay 2012-13 class.
The mission of the program is to cultivate a broadened network of well-informed leaders whose strengthened commitment to community involvement will affect positive change in Bay County.
Leadership Bay was founded in 1983 and is a community leadership development program of the Bay County Chamber in conjunction with Gulf Coast State College. Based on the premise that people are our most important resource, the purpose of the program is to offer potential leaders a curriculum in community leadership training.
Leadership Bay sessions begin in October with a mandatory overnight kick-off retreat on October 12th & 13th at Tyndall Air Force Base. The selected class will participate in full day sessions held every other Wednesday beginning in October and graduating in May. Participants are responsible for producing a project of benefit to the Chamber and/or the community outside of the regular curriculum hours.
The deadline for applications is Friday, August 3rd at 4 p.m. Applications and information are available online at www.panamacity.org. If you have any questions you may contact Elizabeth at the Chamber at (850) 215-3761. |
