J.W. Pedersen Transitions to REVIT

This year we are begginning to provide architectural and design services using Revit, a building information modeling (BIM) software.  Building information modeling uses three-dimensional, real-time, dynamic building modeling software to increase productivity in building design and construction when compared to traditional two dimensional CAD produced documentation.

BIM provides the potential for a virtual information model to be handed from design team (architects, surveyors, consulting engineers, and others) to contractor and subcontractors and then to the building owner. Each may add their own specific knowledge and track changes to the single electronic file or model. The result is greatly reduced information loss when moving between construction phases of a project.  It also allows for extensive information to be delivered to owners of complex structures far beyond that which they are currently accustomed to having.

BIM can greatly decrease errors made by design members and the construction team by allowing the use of conflict detection in which the software informs team members about parts of the building in conflict or clashing, and through detailed computer visualization of each part in relation to the total building. This error reduction is a cost savings that can be realized by all members of a project with reduced construction directly contributing to the cost savings of the building owner.

RS Means Business Solutions, a compiler of construction cost information for the US, Canada & Mexico estimates virtually all construction projects will use BIM technologies in within two years.
