VHP OCTOBER UPDATE
Dear Valued Member,

September was such a busy month and before you know it, October arrived!  Here is October's Update.

Advocacy
The legislature has been focused on attempting to pass a budget. As soon as their schedules are freed up, we are scheduling site visits with member CEOs, Government Affairs VPs/Directors, our lobbyist, Jon Smalley, and the legislators.  Meetings will be held in your community.
Community Health
Bronson HealthCare graciously hosted the Community Health Improvement workgroup meeting on September 22.  The group completed the criteria for determining high and low value community health programs.

To date, they have accomplished:
     1.  A summary of every member's community
health program - this ended up to be a book.
     2.  A philosophy for community benefit programs.
     3.  A criterion based methodology to approve new programs.
     4.  The high and low value program for evaluating existing programs.

At this meeting, the team heard a presentation by Terry Khan, Director Value Maximization, VHP, regarding dashboards.  We are pursuing aligning our community programs with impacting the patient outcomes detailed on the dashboard.  The first condition to explore is stroke.  The workgroup is looking at ways to impact the time it takes for patients to realize they are having a stroke and get to the ED in a timely manner.

Stay tuned for more developments!

Value Maximization Team Meeting
The Value Maximization Team held a meeting on September 15 at Value Health Partners in Grand Rapids.  The team collaborated on how the clinical dashboards are used within their respective organizations.  Some partner hospitals are using the dashboards as supportive data sources in their physician leadership meetings surrounding the evaluation and revision of order sets.  The majority of quality leaders are using the dashboards to identify areas for clinical process improvement.  The team has received 12 months of data (Jan-Dec 2008) with Q1 Mar 2009 to be released by mid-October.
