Value Maximization

The Value Maximization team is sharpening its pencils for the start of fall training with two member organizations attending the 4-month Healthcare Performance Improvement Course held at the Calvin College Prince Conference Center.

Sparrow Hospital has formed a team to research and improve peri-operative blood sugar management lead by Julie Felt, MD, MMM, CPE.  Julie is Sparrow's Medical Director for Performance Improvement.  Sparrow's study will be benchmarked with the Oregon National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Consortium and Oregon Patient Safety Commission.

Team members include:  Todd Belding, Registered Pharmacist; Julie Bay RN, Performance Improvement Specialist; Chris Blocker RN, PACU; Tate Egger MD, Anesthesia; Julie Felt MD, Performance Improvement Medical Director; Lynn Raynor, RN, MSN Clinical Nurse Educator; Brian Shedd RN, Outpatient Surgery Manager; Valerie Schultz RN, OR Manager; and Betty Woodland CRNA.

A few of the several clinical outcomes from this study are anticipated reductions in post surgical complications related to glucose control, reduced mortality and morbidity, and reduced length of stay.

Allegiance Hospital is spring boarding its efforts at the course by studying ED thru put under the leadership of Chris Calderone, MAOM, MBA, Allegiance Quality Specialist.  The goal of this study is to review patient flow and identify process bottlenecks that impact patient care and optimize provider resources ultimately increasing patient and family satisfaction.

Team members include:  Kristen Berger, Quality Improvement Specialist; Chris Calderone, Quality Improvement Specialist; and Laura Ratecliff, Manager ED Services

The Value Maximization Team has recently received fourth quarter 2008 clinical dashboards.  Covenant Hospital has used the data to form a team to begin reviewing Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) complications in the orthopedic conditions under the leadership of Sue Patterson RN, MSN Director of Clinical Resource Management, and Michael Schultz, MD, Chief Quality Officer.

Clinical data summarized on the Hip Fracture Dashboard has steered some of the Partner Hospitals to begin a collaborative study looking at post surgical complications and improvement of patient outcomes.  This work will start in the fall with Allegiance, Covenant, Lakeland, Northern Michigan and Spectrum participating.
