Spring is Almost Here! March 2010
Pansys and Cole Crops now Ready at
Village Gardens
 Greetings!

Hopefully, all of the "S" stuff is behind us, and warmer days are ahead.  While every new gardening season is exciting, this year is gearing up to surpass all others!

Gardeners are getting the itch early this year, and our cole crops are a perfect way to start the season.  If you haven't had a chance to ready your garden, cabbages, brocoli, and lettuces grow great in nursery pots!  We experimented last fall and had a bountiful harvest!

Pansy's and Primrose add a superb amount of color this time of year!  Consider planting near your door or entrance for a bright welcome home!  If the ground is still too wet, pansy's and primrose are great in planters and hanging baskets!
Pansy Flats
Mix and match a tray of twelve 4-packs for a splash of color thatMajestic Giant Pansy will last well into the early Summer.

Pansies are a favorite spring bedding annual for its vibrant colors and love of cool spring weather.  Pansies are very easy to grow and perform best in light shade.

Cole Crops - Broccoli, Cabbages, Cauliflower, Lettuce, etc.
The first vegetables that are ready to be set out in the spring are called "ColeMixed Arrangement Crops."  The term "cole" actually means stem and has nothing to do with the fact that these vegetables perform best in the cool growing season.

We have carefully selected varieties of Cabbage, Cauliflower, Brocoli, Brussels Sprouts and Kale that grow best here.  According to the Virginia Cooperative Extension Office, the best time to plant cole crops in between the middle of March and the end of April.
