| We Know It's Tough Out There! |

| Hi Everyone~
Welcome to all our new readers this week! You join 213,000 other weekly readers who hopefully are finding something in the material presented each week to help in their career search. Congrats to four of our clients this week, Chris, Jannine, Chuck and a special congrats to Walt who landed a job after a long year and a half of searching! Enjoy this weeks' material and let us hear from you!
It's a new month and you are approaching another week, a week of searching for that new opportunity! The weeks are rolling into months and you are wondering if something will ever 'pop' for you. You realize the holidays are approaching and it sure would feel good to have a new job before the holidays are here. Some of you have said, "Mr. Jackson, we don't need to hear that, we need to read an uplifting message this week!"
The advice I can share with you is this.......the job seekers that have a well planned and executed job search strategy, and those that understand it is not a good use of time to sit in front of your PC and click and send hundreds of resumes, are the job seekers who are finding new, exciting, well paying career opportunities despite the tight job market. How are they doing it, you ask? Here are some thoughts you might consider as you prepare for the week ahead:
-
Think of yourself as a brand - what are your core strengths and where have your career successes been?
-
What industries, besides the one you have become comfortable in, could use your skills and experiences?
-
How do you engage yourself in conversations and get yourself in front of those that might want to 'buy' your brand or who could help you promote your brand?
-
Build a strategy as you would on any other project and then work that plan.
The reason so many people turn to our firm is very simple. We work with you to discover your core strengths, how to engage others that can help you present your strengths to employers that need you, and to prepare your personal marketing tool kit. Our coaches aren't easy. They keep you on track, and the end result is that you get yourself off the "click and send" bandwagon and into a self-affirming process that begins to market your valuable skills and experiences. JLC works with you on the cost so that you are working on your search not worried about what it costs you. We can't promise you a job, but we can certainly coach you to a place where you are confident, market driven, and headed down the right path, the path you create and believe will work for you!
So don't start the week with the "same old same old" attitude my friends! Put some muscle in your process by thinking through these simple steps. Remember, we care about you and will be there if you need a little help from your friends!
Here's to a great week,
V. Mikal Jackson

| Helpful Hints For Your Cover Letter~ |
When you need to write a cover letter, it's sometimes the small things that make a big difference. Mentioning a name of someone who works at the company, for example, can get your cover letter and resume a closer look. Noting what you know about the company helps, too. Taking the time to write a custom cover letter for each job you apply for probably is the best value you can add your to candidacy for a job, on the chart of what's most important in cover letter writing. On the flip side, of course, are the mistakes you shouldn't be making like spelling the company name wrong or even transposing your own phone number. I know someone who did that and didn't realize it until she after had applied for a ton of jobs. That's why it's important to check, double-check, and triple-check your job application materials before you send them out or upload them to apply for a job. Review these cover letter tips and techniques for writing top notch cover letters :
Types of Cover Letters Resume Cover Letters When you're writing a cover letter to apply for an advertised job, you will be sending a traditional cover letter with your resume. Your cover letter should be customized for the job you are applying for, so the reader can see, at a glance, why you are a top candidate for the jobs.
Prospecting Letters Prospecting letters are letters inquiring about open positions at a company, rather than letters applying for a specific job opening. This letters should also be customized so the reader knows you have an understanding of the company and its mission. When sending prospecting letters, include a copy of your resume.
Networking Letters Networking letters are letters written to contacts requesting job search assistance or career advice. Referral letters are used to write to a mutual connection asking them to refer you to a job opportunity or requesting assistance with a job search. Letters of introduction are used to refer a candidate to a prospective employer. There are also general networking letters you can use to ask for job search help. Again, send your resume with your networking letter so the reader can see your background and experience.
Customize Your Cover Letter It can be time consuming to write a custom cover letter for each job you apply for, but it's important to take the time and effort to show the company why you are a good match.
Email Cover Letters When you're sending an email cover letter, it's important to follow the employer's instructions on how to submit your cover letter and resume, and to make sure that your email cover letters are written as well as any other correspondence you send. |
| Job Search Scams- Be Careful Out there Gang! |
Job search privacy is an important issue for anyone who uses the Internet to job search, and that's most people. In fact, it's almost impossible to job search without going online. Personal information has been stolen from job sites and there many companies who prey on unsuspecting job seekers. How Job Search Scams Work As an example, I read very detailed email correspondence between a candidate for employment and what she thought was a hiring manager at a job she had applied for. The information was very persuasive and included a detailed job offer. After some back and forth, it turned out the "employer" needed her bank account information, or so they said, in order to hire her. It was, of course, a scam, but I can see how she was almost taken advantage of. This wasn't a unique experience. Unfortunately, it happens all the time. There are, however, some things you can do to protect your privacy when you're job searching. If you're careful, you'll be able to conduct an online job search while keeping your personal information confidential. Don't Share Confidential Information Never include the following on your resume, in your cover letters, in email, or in accounts you set up on job sites.
Date of Birth
Social Security Number
Driver's License Number
Bank Account Number
Credit Card Information
PayPal Account Number
Mother's Maiden Name
How to Protect Your Privacy You can help protect your online privacy by taking the time to set up accounts (email accounts and user names/passwords) to use just for your job search. Don't mix your personal or work information with your job search accounts. The more separate you keep them, the easier it is to protect your confidential information.
Email Address Use a dedicated email address just for your job search. It will not only help you protect your privacy, it will help you keep track of your job search correspondence and applications. Free email accounts, like Gmail, are available, and with web-based email you can check your email from anywhere.
Job Site Logins Don't use the same login information that you use for your personal online accounts (i.e. your banking or shopping). Use a different user name and password for the job search and career networking sites you use.
Email Messages Be wary of phishing emails from fraudulent employers. Double-check to make sure the company and the job posting are legitimate by visiting the company web site (rather than clicking on the link in the email) and review the company (the "About Us" section is a good place to start) and the job listing. If you're not sure, research the company online before you respond.
On the Phone Be just as careful on the phone as you are with email. Don't give out any personal information - legitimate employers don't need it and won't be asking for it.
Keep Track Keep track of everywhere you post your resume, along with your user name and passwords. Tools like JibberJobber are available that will track where you have sent your resume, as well as communications with your contacts.
Don't Share Information Do not share any confidential information with a potential employer unless you are absolutely sure they are legitimate (and don't count email-only correspondence as valid communications). Employers don't need your social security until they hire you.
Check Out the Company Take the time to thoroughly check out the company. Review the warning signs to watch for, if you're having reservations about whether this is the company for you.
Avoid Scams Avoid scams by researching job listings and companies before you apply. One quick way to check is to Google the company name plus scam ("company abc scam") to see if there are any complaints. With some companies, I've found pages of results, with more than enough information to know that nobody should apply for a job there.
