 RESUME'  EDITION

"What is wrong (or right) with my resume'?"

Hello Everyone~

Welcome to all new readers this week.  Hope you are having a great start to the summer and that you find this weekly newsletter meaningful.

This week the focus is on resumes, resumes, resumes.  In our recent survey ( almost 1,000 responses so far) 92.5% of you felt that a professional resume was important. Interestingly, less than 35% of the readers had sought out advice or purchased resume services and less than 25% had revisited your resume in the last 12 months.  So, for most of you, it appears you write your own resume and we hope this newsletter helps you through this important process.  Your resume is your "brand" and your "calling card".  Today, your resume needs to be in a number of different forms as well as written so that automated systems do not rule you out.

Have a great week and contact us if you want to find out more about our coaching or take advantage of our free evaluation of your resume.  For all current coaching clients, remember to E mail  your schedule requests for next week.  For those who are as needed clients, remember open time for calls are always Wednesday and Thursday between 4:00pm-7:00pm EST.

10 THINGS THAT DEFINE A KILLER RESUME'

resume3
Here are 10 things that define a killer resume:

1.Your resume isn't about you. It's about how you fit the employer's job requirements. Always organize and select your most relevant accomplishments, skills, and experiences for the position. The most effective resumes are clearly focused on a specific job title and address the employer's stated needs.

2.Your resume must sell you in seconds. Show how you contribute to the position at a glance. Your resume is a failure if the employer doesn't instantly see you have what it takes.

3.Your resume is a marketing tool, not a personal document. Sell yourself, not your life story. Leave the personal stuff off your resume and focus on the skills that sizzle.

4.Your resume highlights your accomplishments, not job duties or descriptions. Write your resume to emphasize what you did well, not what your duties entailed.

5.Your resume must focus on your future, not your past. Don't become a historian by documenting your life in resume format. BORING. No one cares what you did in 1975. Seriously. See #1.

6.Your resume shows the skills you enjoy, not skills you have to use. Why focus on the stuff you don't want to do? Highlight the skills you love! The Find Your Passion Worksheet (it's not pervy, I promise) can help you identify your favorite skills.

7.Your resume is not a confessional. You don't have to tell all. Who cares if you were on sick leave with 8 kids to feed. Stick to what's relevant, important, and marketable. You need to land the job interview, not a guest appearance on Oprah.

8.Your resume must list the important facts first. Hiring teams will not stick around to find how the story ends.

9.Your resume must be free from grammatical and typographical errors. Errors and typos are a big no-no. Get someone to review and edit your resume before you apply to the job. Pobody's Nerfect.

10.Your resume must have a clean layout. No one wants to read a garbled mess. If you can't design your own layout, start with a template.

A killer resume increases the employer's interest enough to land you a job interview. That's it. A resume's purpose is to get your foot in the door and take you to the next step.

How to get along with Applicant Tracking Systems

atsIf you're searching for a job, as many Americans currently are, there are some things you can do to make your resume more applicant tracking-friendly.

In today's recruiting world, your resume is often not even considered by a human, but by an applicant tracking system. While this makes recruiting easier on companies, it takes away the personal touch of HR and can result in job seekers' resumes being lost in the shuffle.

According to an article by Examiner, most major companies today use some form of ATS to assist with the hiring process. ATS is a type of software designed for recruitment tracking and managing resume data. This means if your resume doesn't include key phrases and information that the ATS is programmed to identify, your resume could easily be overlooked.

"With companies receiving hundreds of resumes daily, an ATS collects job-seeker information from data fields that are submitted on the company Web site, from applicants who apply on Internet job boards or data that is easily retrieved by scanning resumes," the article notes. "An ATS is programmed to sift through and purse this data to identify key phrases that best match skill sets, years of experience, levels of expertise, industry experience, technical skills and other words and phrases."

That means the resumes of the most qualified candidates are submitted to the company's HR department for a further look. Although ATS isn't perfect, it saves the HR company a lot of time and money and still produced high quality candidates.

"Bottom Line," the article adds. "You can easily format your resume to be 'ATS friendly' and increase your chances of being hired. Look closely at the job description and make sure your resume calls out key phrases in its summary statement. If you are unsure, use a professional resume writer or a job-seeking consultant to assist you in rewriting/reformatting your resume."

Reader Question:  How can your coaching over the phone be effective?

Why is telephone coaching so successful?
Over 91% of all successful coaching is conducted over the telephone. Here are the many reasons why.

1. Telephone coaching virtually assures success because you will be connected with your ideal coach. We have found and studies confirm that clients who create their ideal client/coach relationship accomplish their desired results almost every time, and clients that do not create the ideal client/coach relationship are much less successful. The odds that you and your ideal coach will be within reasonable travel distance are extremely low. With telephone coaching, you will be able to select from coaches located almost anywhere, so you can focus on how well they meet your ideal coach requirements, without geographical limitations.

2. Telephone coaching is much more effective. Neither you nor the coach will be distracted by physical actions or appearances of each other or the surroundings where you would meet. You want your coach to be your equal partner andthe telephone is the great equalizer. It is very difficult for either you or your coach to intentionally or accidentally become the superior person over the telephone. The telephone allows the coaching experience to be focused entirely on you, as it is intended.

3. Telephone coaching is much more efficient. You and your coach will get into coaching right away. You will not have to conduct normal social graces required in face to face meetings. We have found that telephone coaching sessions generally require 50% to 75% less time than face to face coaching. In addition, telephone coaching requires much less preparation time, because neither you nor your coach will have to spend time traveling.

4. Telephone coaching is much less costly. Telephone coaching has proven to cost approximately 60% Less Than face-to-face coaching. You will not have to pay for the travel expenses for your coach or yourself, and you will not waste your valuable time traveling. You will pay lower coaching fees and use less of your time during the sessions, because telephone coaching requires less time than face to face coaching.

5. Telephone coaching is very convenient and relaxing. You will be able to conduct your coaching sessions from any location you wish. Neither you nor your coach will have to overcome the frustrations or the delays and hassles of traveling. You will be able to select a quiet, private and relaxed place to be during coaching sessions.

6. Telephone coaching is very confidential. The private and secure place you choose to be during coaching sessions will assure complete confidentiality. No one will know who you are talking to, let alone what you are talking about.

7. Telephone coaching is very enjoyable. You will be able to be yourself in private and have more fun doing it. You will be able to enjoy the moment without concern for others watching or listening.

As you can see, all of the above reasons make telephone coaching much more valuable and fun to do. However, there might be times when face to face coaching would be best for clients. How long do you want telephone coaching sessions to last? You will want your telephone coaching sessions to last at least 30 minutes, but not longer that 60 minutes. We have found that most people are more energetic and more attentive during phone coaching sessions that last from 30 minutes to 60 minutes in length. We have also found that face-to-face coaching will generally take much longer.
