Student Spotlight
Annie Gigliotti
Second-year student, Annie Gigliotti, RN, talks about the journey that led her to Emperor's College and the future of Oriental medicine.

EC: Annie, how long have you been a registered nurse? What are the reasons you joined the field of healthcare and why are you pursuing your master's in Acupuncture and Oriental medicine at Emperor's College?
AG: I've been practicing for 8 years now. Helping the sick is something I have always loved. I know this is hard to believe but even as a kid I loved visiting the hospital because I knew it would bring smiles to the patients' faces. And even after all this time I still feel the same. Acupuncture and Oriental medicine is something I benefited from first-hand after a bout of food poisoning. I had an incredible treatment that left me feeling back to normal in just 2 hours. It was then that I realized how powerful Oriental medicine is and that it was something I had to explore further.
EC: What has been your favorite part of studying at Emperor's College so far?
AG: I love the fact that I have already been able to integrate the things I've learned with my patients and in my daily life. I see the world and health through a different lens now. Everything relates back to what I'm learning in my classes. I'm paying attention to my patients' complexion and pulses, I'm eating with the seasons, I'm learning qi gong and I'm passing it on to the patients I treat. I'm also talking to the doctors I work with about how Oriental medicine views the body. They are excited to work with me to provide patients with the best care possible.
EC: What would you say to other western medical professionals who are thinking about a degree in Acupuncture and Oriental medicine?
AG: I would say, 'Just do it!' I am quickly realizing that not just one medicine can treat everything. Oriental medicine is blending beautifully with my western background and is giving me so many more tools to work with. Not long ago I felt limited in the ways I could treat my patients but now I know my knowledge and skill-set is so much more versatile and comprehensive. Although returning to school seems daunting, it is an investment in your future. The program is flexible enough for me to enroll as a part-time student and I am so glad I chose to invest at Emperor's College!

Making Oriental medicine a Global medicine

Keeping Healthy this Flu Season
elementary point locationT'is the time to treat your body well

Tips from Emperor's faculty that will keep your immune system strong this fall and all year round.
  • "Get plenty of sleep and don't skimp on the hand washing. 'Yu Ping Feng' is a great herbal formula for immune strength, as is daily Vitamin C." - Rina Zhai, LAc
  • "Wear a scarf! Keeping your neck warm and protected from 'evil qi' is just as important as washing your hands." - Michael Appelian, OMD, LAc
  • "Sleep with a humidifier in your bedroom that contains a mixture of water and a 1/2 cup of white vinegar. The acidity makes it difficult for viruses and bacteria to grow." -Yi Qiao, LAc, MPH
  • "Like in nature, autumn is for scaling back your activities and allowing your body to rest. Get plenty of sleep, eat warm foods and stay away from stimulants such as caffeine and alcohol." - Camille Harris, LAc, LMT
  • "Daily meditation, tai chi, qi gong or yoga will help your body produce antibodies against illness and will contribute to lower stress levels. Regular acupuncture, herbal medicine and massaging of tender pressure points is also important for achieving optimal health." - Academic Dean, Dr. Jacques MoraMarco, OMD, LAc
A Message from the Doctoral Program
Advance your Career:
Become a Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine
Apply now for January 2010!

elementary point location
Doctoral Programs are integral for the growth and development of the field of Oriental Medicine. As OM becomes more integrated into the landscape of western medicine, the demand for acupuncturists with the highest level of training will increase. The 2007 National Health Interview Study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that pain accounted for 7 of the top 10 reasons patients seek out acupuncture. Emperor's College is meeting this demand by offering a specialty Doctoral Program (DAOM) with a focus on Orthopedics and Internal Medicine.

This month, Emperor's College welcomed its 5th doctoral cohort with a class of students spanning the globe. The first weekend of the 24-months program featured Dr. Takeshi Komatsu, DAOM, LAc, acupuncturist to Olympic and professional sports teams. Dr. Komatsu's reputation for treating world-class athletes brought him to the US in 1989 as one of the first sports medicine acupuncturists in the country.

Upcoming modules include Classical 5-Element Acupuncture with French scholar Elisabeth Rochat de la Vallee, MA; Master Tung-style acupuncture with internationally-renowned Dr. Robert Chu, PhD, LAc; Auricular Therapy with pioneering researcher Terry Oleson, PhD; and Acupuncture Orthopedics with one of the nation's leading practitioners and researchers of East/West Orthopedics, Dr. Hua Gu, MD, PhD, LAc.

It's not too late to take your career to the next level and earn an advanced degree from the most established scholars, practitioners and researchers in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Applications are currently being accepted for January 2010.

In the words of Emperor's alumna and Doctoral fellow Patricia Fitzgerald: "I am so glad I chose this program. I think it's a must for every acupuncturist who wants to take their practice to the next level."

For more information, go to www.emperors.edu or contact Dr. David Migocki, Doctoral Program Director, at 310-453-8300 ext. 113.
Current Clinical Research by Emperor's Faculty
Acupuncture and Coronary Heart Disease

Dr. Anna Brantman, DAOM, LAc and Yi Qiao, MPH, LAc have recently concluded an NIH-funded research study investigating the effects of acupuncture on the mechanisms of coronary heart disease.

The study, conducted at Cedar-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles, measured heart variability rate, blood pressure, blood lipoproteins and subjective symptoms of psychosocial stress of patients with established coronary heart disease. Three groups of patients receiving different treatments (traditional acupuncture, "sham" acupuncture and conventional western care) were compared.

Though the results of their research have not yet been published, the traditional acupuncture group was been reported to show promising results.

To follow the progress of Brantman and Qiao's research, go to clinicaltrials.gov and search for study #NCT00570024.
