Kilometers for Care  in Kenya!

Flying Pig Marathon

On May 2, SOTENI International board member Daniel Odipo will run in Cincinnati's Flying Pig Marathon to raise money for the vulnerable people living in SOTENI Villages of Hope. Daniel, who has seen firsthand the effects of HIV/AIDS in Kenya, hopes to raise $2500. You can help Daniel as a sponsor. To make a donation, visit SOTENI's website or

Epidemiology- SOTENI's fourth guiding principle

       April-May 2010
Dear ,

For SOTENI, epidemiology means designing, evaluating, and replicating programs that reduce the incidence and severity of HIV/AIDS.

The AIDS Barefoot Doctors (ABD) program exemplifies SOTENI's focus on epidemiology. ABDs use best practices to improve the lives of those affected by HIV/AIDS, to educate their communities, and to reduce the stigma associated with the disease. During my recent trip to Kenya, ABDs spoke with pride of the changes that occurred in the lives of their HIV/AIDS clients.

Without your support, it won't be possible to continue to strengthen and develop our programs. I ask that you make a donation this month so that, together, we can improve the lives of vulnerable people in Kenya.

Asante sana! (Thank you very much!)

AIDS Barefoot Doctors look toward the future

The MAC AIDS Foundation funded SOTENI's AIDS Barefoot Doctors program through the end of 2009 in SOTENI Villages of Hope Mituntu and Mbakalo. From June to November of 2009, ABDs made 2,056 home visits to 123 people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), and conducted home programs and forums which reached 2,826 people.

Henry Mwami, an ABD in SVH Mbakalo, reports that the program has "created a new sense of confidence in the PLWHA and the community."

The future of these AIDS Barefoot Doctors is promising. Three important grants have recently been acquired which will facilitate the ABDs' work with clients in Mituntu and Mbakalo:
  • The Procter & Gamble Fund of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation has agreed to fund a safe drinking water project for two years in Mituntu and Mbakalo. ABDs will distribute over 700,000 PUR water sachets as they continue to educate those they serve.
  • In Mituntu, as part of an American Medical and Research Foundation-funded project to strengthen PLWHA action against AIDS, ABDs will supervise the planting of 50 PLWHA home gardens.
  • The District AIDS Control Council has funded a "Today's Choices, Tomorrow's Future" project, which the ABDs will help implement in Mituntu by emphasizing prevention and encouraging correct and consistent condom use.
SOTENI is also pleased to announce that for the first time, ABDs will be on the ground in SVH-Ugenya! The Constituency AIDS Control Council is providing funding for a six-month project to support the primary caregivers of PLWHA. The grant will cover the training of the ABDs and their stipends as they make home visits to supervise and train both caregivers and PLWHA. We can't wait to see the positive results of the new ABDs' work!
