Live crash test planned for Eastern Creek

Excitement plus ... live crash demonstration of the BarrierGuard 800

The life-saving properties of the BarrierGuard 800 will be showcased at a live crash demonstration at Eastern Creek Raceway on February 23.

The demonstration, organised and sponsored by Coates Hire, will involve a car impacting the barrier at 80km/h after crossing one lane of traffic at an angle of 15 degrees.

The Barrierguard 800 has been designed to absorb an impact and will redirect the vehicle back on to the road with minimal damage to the car or the barrier. Attendees will be invited to inspect both the car and the barrier following the demonstration.

Industry professionals interested in viewing the live crash demonstration are invited to email patriciaf@boylan.net.au for further details.

Barrier on wheels saves the day

Barrier wheeled
Limited access ... the BG800 wheeled barrier used on the underbridge repair project.

The  BarrierGuard Wheeled system saved the day during a tricky underbridge repair project in the UK recently.

Barrier protection was required to safeguard scaffolding while copings on the bridge - on the A66 at Stainton - were replaced. However, the headroom was too low to allow the use of a crane or a forklift.

The contractor, EnterpriseMouchel, chose the BarrierGuard Wheeled system - supplied by Boylan Group's UK affiliate Highway Care - for its superior performance and ease of installation.

The 12m barrier sections - weighing just over 1 tonne - were wheeled into position up and down a 1-in-3 slope by four operatives and then joined together to secure the "QuickMount" sections.

The two runs of barrier were effortlessly installed in 2-3 hours despite having to periodically halt works to allow local traffic access.

A spokesman for EnterpriseMouchel said the narrow site made installation extremely difficult for a conventional barrier system.

"However, the [BarrierGuard Wheeled] installation was completed quickly and with minimal disruption to traffic," he said.

The BarrierGuard Wheeled is part of the BarrierGuard 800 range that includes Minimum Deflection Barrier and Gate systems.

Boylan SafetyGrip

Boylan SafetyGrip ... ideal for bus lanes, school zones and bike lanes

Boylan Group has launched a new state-of-the-art road safety product - Boylan SafetyGrip.

SafetyGrip is a recycled glass aggregate that offers excellent skid resistance in both wet and dry conditions.

SafetyGrip also offers high reflectivity, colour brightness and superior colour retention, plus it has excellent durability - superior even to calcined bauxite. Tests carried out by NATA (National Association of Testing Authorities) show that SafetyGrip has a percentage wear factor of only 18% after polishing, compared to calcined bauxite which has a 25% wear factor after polishing.

Ideal for school zones, bus lanes and cycle lanes, it is an eco-friendly product manufactured in Australia.

UK move raises concerns about barriers

aged barrier

Can some of Britain's more ageing road barriers cope with a 130km/h speed limit?

A  move in the UK to increase the speed limit on motorways from 70mph (113km/h) to 80mph (129km/h) has raised questions about the safety of the country's road barrier system.

UK Transport Secretary Philip Hammond recently proposed the change as a means of decreasing journey times.

He said the justification for higher speed was the design and technological improvements that have made the cars of today far safer than those of 1965, when the 70mph limit was first introduced into Britain.

However, the move has brought criticism from the country's peak motoring group.

RAC Foundation director Stephen Glaister recently told the BBC that the existing permanent barrier system was inadequate.

"All barriers need to be brought up to the standard of the best, because they are not at the moment," Professor Glaister said.

"You can improve the performance of motorways by improving the crash barrier," he said.

Eagle Eye debuts at Gulf Traffic Dubai

Eagle Eye Gulf Traffic

Cutting-edge Australian technology ... Boylan Eagle Eye.

Boylan Eagle Eye debuted to much acclaim at the Gulf Traffic Dubai exhibition recently.

The Australian-designed "no power, no wires" remote monitoring technology is particularly suited to the geographical challenges of the Middle East, according to Ben Duncker, of Boylan's UK-based affiliate Highway Care International.

"The feedback from the show was really positive, resulting in a number of interesting leads for major projects," Ben said.

Eagle Eye currently monitors many remote sites in Australia, saving roads authorities thousands of dollars in labour and travel costs.
