 safetyflex

Slimline and stylish ... Boylan's PAS68-rated street furniture.

The Boylan Group can now offer an exciting new range of security bollards and street furniture.
The SafetyFlex products carry the UK's PAS68 rating, which means they have been designed to guard against the highest level of vehicular threat .
Key features:
*    Made of specially-formulated spring steel.
*    Uses less steel and is therefore amazingly cost competitive against other products.
*    The spring steel works like a suspension spring - on impact, it absorbs the

kinetic energy and transfers that energy back into the attacking vehicle.
*    Slim-line design makes for stylish and beautiful street furniture.
*    Requires a shallow footing of only 400mm; 20-year lifespan.

Amazing success rate of average speed camera technology

average speed

Above: The average speed camera technology operating on London's Tower Bridge is combined with a vehicle classification and weight enforcement system.

Average speed camera technology in the UK has been found to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured (KSI) at traffic hotspots by an average of 73 per cent.
The UK's Department for Transport recently released data from 15 average speed enforcement locations (SPECS). KSI reductions ranged from 49 per cent to 100 per cent, with an overall average reduction of 73 per cent.
The UK-based Highways Magazine says the data reveals just how significant the technology is as a casualty reduction tool.
Data was captured from locations where Vysionics cameras had been operational for at least three years, allowing for a comparison with the three-year pre-installation figures.
The article went on to say: "In addition to these casualty reduction improvements, SPECS controlled zones deliver smoother traffic flows, reduced emissions and are perceived to be a fairer solution
"Local and national media were quick to report on this data, in many cases picking out the isolated instances where fixed point camera installations have seen an increase in the number of KSI, post installation."
Boylan's is the Australian distributor for Vysionics technology. Call National Operations Manager Wayne Duckworth on 0418 211 510 to discuss further.

Unforseen toll of 9/11 terrorist attacks

2011

Sharp spike ... the US road toll surged after the 2001 terrorist attacks.

The September 11 terrorist attacks in US had an unforeseen impact - a sharp rise in the road toll.
While the official 9/11 toll stands at 2996, experts estimate a further 1595 people died on US roads in the year following the attacks as a result of behavioural changes induced by fear.
Passenger miles on the main US airlines declined by up to 20 per cent, while road use jumped.
Professor Gerd Gigerenzer, a German academic specialising in risk, says travelling long distances by car is more dangerous than travelling the same distance by plane.
"We have an evolutionary tendency to fear situations in which many people die at one time," Professor Gigerenzer said.
" This is likely a hold-over from when we lived in small groups, where the death of a small part of the group could place the lives of everyone else in jeopardy."

Boylan motorsport roundup

  Laguna

Australian contingent ... David Withers, Geoff Morgan and Peter Boylan

with their three 2.7 Carreras.

BOYLAN managing director Peter Boylan recently joined fellow Australian drivers Geoff Morgan and David Withers at the Rennsport Reunion IV, the world's largest gathering of past and present Porsche race cars.

Held at Laguna, California, the three-day program of on-track competition is complemented by a concours d'elegance, which is open to invited race participants, and special activities celebrating the decades-long history of the legendary 911 race cars.

More than 350 of the rarest Porsche race cars competed on the track and a field of 1300-plus Porsches staged in the traditional car corral area.
In the race stakes, Peter finished 2nd in class and 22nd outright out of a field of 45 Porsches.

PETER'S Australian GT campaign took a beating in round six of the series at Bathurst.
Damage sustained in race one prevented Boylan from finishing and,
despite the effort of the Autohaus Hamilton crew, he missed race two.
"I can't speak highly enough of the team from Autohaus Hamilton," Peter said. "They worked so hard to get the car out for the second race but, unfortunately, luck wasn't on our side this weekend."
Boylan was the innocent party in an incident on the opening lap on the first lap. Greg Crick spun at the top of the mountain after electing to start the race on slick tyres, despite the amount of moisture still on the track.  Crick collected Boylan as he went around and caused extensive damage to the right-hand side of the car.
"It's a shame we couldn't get back out. The car was coming on strong and I felt we had a strong chance of a podium finish again this round."
Boylan heads into the final round of the championship at Sandown Raceway with a 13-point lead in the Challenge Class, despite scoring no points for the round.
"I am excited about the potential to win the Challenge Class in Australian GT," Peter said. "It's a fantastic series and to win it in my first year would be a real treat."

James Moffat put himself firmly on the V8 Supercar landscape with a storming performance in Saturday's (October 22) leg of the two-race Gold Coast 600.
After qualifying for his first-ever Top Ten Shootout for Saturday's race, he then led his first-ever V8 Supercar Championship race for almost 30 laps ... and doing so convincingly, before then turning in a storming drive back from 11th place after a pitstop to fourth by the finish.
Sunday's race was less successful, the #18 Jim Beam Falcon hobbled by brake problems from the very start, losing many laps effecting repairs, before rear axle problems put them out.
"I'm frustrated of course because of the retirement in Sunday's race but when I look back on the weekend, I guess it was a bit of a landmark ... a bit of a breakthrough. It's good to know that when the car's right, I can run with the serious guys at the front of the field," James  said.

Boylan-sponsored racer Daniel Holihan enjoyed his best drive of the season in the final race of the 2011 Castrol EDGE CIK Stars of Karting Championship .
Daniel finished 9th after a blistering race that saw him record one of the top five lap times.
"Hopefully, that awesome drive will be enough to secure me another CIK drive for next season," Daniel said.
Daniel ended the season ranked 10th out of 109 in the CIK Stars of Karting Dunlop Drivers Driver Award program.
