       Poles apart in safety, performance

frangible post

The Boylan Frangible Safety Post offers added safety for motorists and pedestrian alike

Frangible poles aren't a new idea but, in the past, some concerns have been raised about their safety for pedestrians.
While a light pole base that's designed to break away on impact is great news for the driver, it can be a hazard for other motorists or any hapless passerby.
Not the new Frangible Safety Post being launched by Boylan Group this week.  Its unique fibre construction enables it to collapse in a way that reduces the risk of debris, offering added safety to motorists and pedestrians alike. It's an absolutely amazing new product - the latest technology from Europe.

'Red light' penalty to deter speedsters

Stymied .... a new trial in England will see speeding drivers penalised with red light chaos.

How's this for an aggressive approach to curbing speeding? In Britain, speeding motorists will be "shamed" into slowing down by a new safety system which turns traffic lights red whenever a car breaks the speed limit.

The UK's Highways Magazine reports that a pilot scheme of the system will be trialled later this month on two 65kmh roads in Swindon, Wiltshire.

Sensors installed in the road will monitor speed levels and turn the next set of lights red when an approaching vehicle is speeding.

As a result, dozens of surrounding cars will also be held up - bringing shame on the offending driver.

Swindon became the first town in Britain to switch off all its speed cameras in 2009 and council leaders vowed to invest the money saved into alternative schemes.

Swindon Council spokesman Peter Greenhalgh said: "We expect people will learn very quickly not to speed ... habitual speeders will see they will get to their destination quicker if they stick to the speed limit."

Councillor Greenhalgh said he had seen at first hand the success of the cameras in operation in Spain, France and Portugal.

Heavy rain added an element of excitement to the Boylan Group's recent drive day at Eastern Creek - an event held in conjunction with a fundraiser for the Australian Motor Sport Foundation.

Mark Skaife - five-time winner of the Australian V8 Supercar Championship series - was guest driver on the day, taking guests for laps at the wheel of the Boylan M3 BMW.

Peter Boylan's Porche 997 Carrera Cup car was a big favourite, with visitors lining up for a spin in the track's fastest car on the day.

Airborne ... Peter Boylan in action during the Australian GT challenge .

PETER BOYLAN took control of the Challenge class of the Australian GT Championship at Townsville recently.

Peter came out of the weekend with a nine point lead in the Challenge class of the series after picking up the maximum 114 points on offer in the two races.

"Hopefully I can keep in front!" Peter said.

Peter's biggest threat to the weekend was his inability to complete race one after his engine expired after 14 laps. This gave Peter the class victory and a clear run in race two for the weekend.

"There's a lot of good competition and I was sorry to see Tim blow his engine up yesterday. I'm sure he'll be back to try and take the lead off me."

Peter admits the championship lead could tempt him to be back in Australia for the next round.

"I might just stay for Phillip Island..." eluded Boylan.

The Australian GT heads to Victoria's Phillip Island next, September 2-4.

Young third generation driver Matthew Brabham's Formula Ford win tally keeps rising in 2011. His results have been spectacular with 10 wins from 15 races, including a seven-race win streak that was only halted by a clutch failure on the grid.

The decision to move to the Sonic Motor Racing Services Team this year has proved to be the right one. Matthew became comfortable from the very first test back in January, and his confidence has snowballed ever since. He is now one of the leading young drivers in the country and a contender for victory at every race he enters.

The highlight of the year so far was his victory at the Australian National Formula Ford round at the Winton circuit in May. Matthew secured pole and won two of the three races to win the round outright, and joined his father Geoff and uncle David in the record books as an Australian National Formula Ford winner.

Matthew has two National starts at Qld Raceway and Phillip Island to go this year plus a Victorian State race, also at Phillip Island. He is looking forward to competing in those races and is confident he can keep the results rolling in.

James Moffat has yet again impressed with two solid drives into the top 20 during event seven of the V8 Supercars Championship in Townsville recently.

The Jim Beam racer and Boylan-sponsored driver also secured another top 10 qualifying position as he continues to improve the one-lap speed of the #18 Falcon.

"I think overall it was a very positive weekend for me and I'm leaving Townsville feeling happy with my performance," James said.

"We're starting to work the car out in qualifying, which makes the racing that much easier, so hopefully that trend will continue at Queensland Raceway."

Boylan-sponsored kart racer Daniel Holihan sits in 17th place after battling through a tough rookie season in the CIK-KF1 class of the CIK Stars of Karting Series.

Following a disappointing couple of race outings - one in the Northern Territory where he ended up in hospital after crashing his kart - Daniel made valuable ground in the 4th round at Newcastle.

"This round was strung together last minute due to track changes," Daniel said.

"But overall, I think I did pretty good ... I was inside the top 15 most of the weekend and my ribs and body felt fine after the crash," he said.

"I can't wait for the final round at Eastern Creek International Raceway on September 17 and 18."
