100m BarrierGuard Gate a world first

100m Gate

THE first 100m BarrierGuard Gate has been unveiled in the UK.
The gate has been installed in a section of the A27 motorway in Sussex where an adjoining railway bridge requires regular maintenance.
The opening consists of a 30m Emergency Access Gate, which can be hinged open or completely removed, and 70m of the BarrierGuard Wheeled System.
The gate was installed by Boylan Group's UK-based associate, Highway Care.
Highway Care's international sales manager Ben Duncker said the gate was required to allow a contraflow of traffic.
"To do this on a two-lane carriageway, a large crossover was required which could also be easily removed without the need for heavy lifting or moving equipment," Ben said.
"BarrierGuard Wheeled provided the ideal solution."
Each 6m section of BarrierGuard Wheeled is easily handled by two men, disconnected, removed and then repositioned and reconnected, all without the need for special lifting equipment.
"In addition, the client decided to install a 30m Emergency Access Gate at the same location," Ben said.
"Due to the modular flexibility of the BarrierGuard product range, we were able to incorporate a 30m BarrierGuard Gate into the overall 100m run," he said.
"This provided the client with both an emergency and maintenance crossing point."
He said the BarrierGuard Gate was the preferred solution for the client due to its high durability and ease of opening  -  even after a design impact.

Target set for 30 per cent cut in road deaths

Above: The National Road Safety Strategy aims to cut road deaths by 30 per cent over the next decade.

THE future of road safety over the next decade has been outlined in an ambitious new strategy released recently by the Australian Transport Council.
The National Road Safety Strategy 2011-2020 aims to cut deaths and serious injuries on our roads by at least 30 per cent.
On releasing the strategy, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese said that death and serious injury should not be accepted as an inevitable cost of road travel.
Road deaths had fallen by 23 per cent over the last decade, which makes the new target challenging but achievable, he said.
As part of the new strategy, all governments have agreed to implement a number of actions, based on a Safe System approach, which aims to achieve Safe Roads, Safe Speeds, Safe Vehicles, and Safe People. "With road crashes killing approximately 1400 people each year, and seriously injuring 32,000, we must do more to change the way we think and respond to the road safety challenge," Mr Albanese said.
One of the first steps to be implemented will ensure all road projects apply Safe System principles.

The new technology is an exciting advancement for the industry, according to Boylan National Operations Manager Wayne Duckworth.
"SmartBoard offers a new level of versatility and practicality - boards can be controlled locally or integrated into a fleet management software solution as required," Wayne said.
Designed and assembled in Australia, SmartBoards come with a two-year, factory-backed warranty.

Optimising safety for motorists and road workers ... the BarrierGuard 800

THE BarrierGuard 800 has been the subject of a series of training days held around the country recently for Coates Hire staff.

Coates has the exclusive hire distributorship for the BG800 - Australia's highest- rating road barrier.

Boylan National Operations Manager Wayne Duckworth said the installation training days displayed a commitment by Coates to best practice procedures and  optimising safety levels for motorists and road workers.

Ben Duncker, of Boylan's UK associate, Highway Care, also presented at the training seminars. Click here to learn more about the BarrierGuard 800.

Star performer ... the BG800's end treatment absorbed the impact of this recent high-speed collision.

We love any opportunity to showcase the life-saving properties of the BarrierGuard 800.
Happily, the driver walked away from this recent accident on a 80km/h stretch of road near Brisbane's Carrara Stadium. The barrier's end treatment did its job by absorbing the impact of the crash and preventing serious injury or death.

On form ... Peter Boylan scored his first Australian GT Round win recently .

PETER BOYLAN scored his first Australian GT Round win at Eastern Creek recently.
Peter finished first in class in the first one-hour endurance race, having to fight the Tim Poulton/Stig Richards combination for the class win, before going on to finish third in class in the second race.
Peter believes that age should be no barrier to winning races.
"If you want to do something, then age shouldn't stop you," he said.
"You should be able to go out and enjoy motor racing as long as you don't get in people's way. I had some really good dices."
Peter was doing triple duties over the weekend, also competing in his 997 Cup Car in Production Sports and the 1974 Carrera in Group S Historics.
"It was a lot of fun," he said. "I think the big issue was jumping from the Group S car to the 997 Cup Car, then doing a one hour race, coming in and having to out straight away for another one hour race. I've had a fantastic weekend and picked up a few trophies."
Racing in the 997 Cup car, Peter held on for a 11th outright in the Production Sports sprint race - 10th in class. For the one-hour endurance, he had just a matter of minutes after his GT drive to get back out for race two, in which he came 7th - 6th in class.

JAMES Moffat's V8 Supercar debut in Darwin yielded a solid weekend's results for the second-generation racer.
Celebrating his 27th birthday on the Saturday, James drove to a solid 14th before backing that up with 13th on Sunday.
James Moffat's V8 Supercar debut in Darwin last month yielded a solid result for the second-generation racer.
Celebrating his 27th birthday on the Saturday, James drove to a solid 14th before backing that up with 13th on the Sunday.
"You always hope for better but I guess, realistically, to finish in the top half of the field in any V8 Supercar race is what we're aiming for this year, and we achieved that. So I'm happy enough and hoping for better in Townsville."

CIK Stars of Karting driver DANIEL HOULIHAN started the year in Kosmic Karts but is slowly making the change to Exprit Karts.

The Boylan-sponsored driver hopes the chassis change can help secure him some better results in this year's CIK Stars of Karting Series.

He currently sits 21st in the CIK Pro Light Championship.

Daniel hopes the experience he is gaining in high-level kart racing can secure him a longtime career in motorsport.

"This series is all about making future stars of the sport," Daniel said. "Personally, I'd love to race in the V8 Supercars or NASCAR in the future," he said.
