       Tragedy averted at Whittingham

The life-saving properties of the BarrierGuard 800 came under the spotlight recently after a truck driver lost control of his vehicle on the New England Highway at Whittingham.

The 60 tonne vehicle collided with the end cushion of the barrier at 80km/h.
Boylan Traffic Solutions national operations manager Wayne Duckworth said the driver walked away unharmed from the crash.
"He was a very lucky man because the barrier contained the truck and prevented it from colliding with other vehicles on the road," Wayne said.
He said the vehicle only ended up on its side because of a 500mm-deep excavation channel that had been dug nearby.
"The anchor has held beautifully as the barrier stretched to contain the load - however, once the vehicle hit the excavation channel, it tipped," he said.

He may be too young to hold a driver's licence, but Matthew Brabham - a keen motorsport competitor and grandson of triple world Formula One champion Sir Jack Brabham -  is the newest face of Boylan Traffic Solutions' Team Safety initiative.
The program - spearheaded by performance car driver Peter Boylan, motorsport commentator Neil Crompton and veteran touring car champion Allan Moffat, OBE - aims to help reduce road trauma by increasing awareness about the safety message in the wider community.
Peter Boylan said 16-year-old Matthew, a Rising Star challenger in the Formula Ford championship, was an ideal ambassador for the Team Safety message.
"We feel sure that someone of Matthew's talent and vision will appeal to the younger members of our community who we are very keen to reach with our safety message," Peter said.
He said future Team Safety initiatives would include working with state governments to institute road safety programs into the school syllabus.

Safeguarding the most vulnerable ... Queensland's new motorcyle safety strategy

Pro-active approach to curbing bike deaths

T
he Queensland Government's Motorcyle Safety Strategy has set a target of 2012 to initiate changes that will have a positive impact on the "unacceptably" high level of motorcycle-related crashes in the state.
Minister for Transport Rachel Nolan said a proactive approach was needed to curb the rising number of fatalities among motorcyclists.
In 2008, 72 people died as a result of crashes involving motorcycles. This represented about 22 per cent of the Queensland road toll, despite the number of motorcycle registrations being just 4 per cent of the vehicle population.
Among the safety initiatives proposed is motorcycle-friendly road "furniture", such as barriers and under-run protection beneath w-beam guardrails on the outside of curves in high risk/crash locations.
Boylan Traffic Solutions managing director Peter Boylan said the BarrierGuard 800's smooth profile offered increased protection to motorcyclists.
"Barriers with gaps, wire rails or protruding bolts can cause horrendous injuries when impacted by a rider or pillion passenger," Peter said. "It's one of the many reasons why the BG800 is the barrier of choice at so many sites both here and overseas," he said.
The BarrierGuard 800 is the only temporary steel barrier in the world to meet the requirements of the standard NCHRP 350 (Test Level 4) and EN 1317-2 (Containment Levels N2 and H2).

Heartbreaking safety message

everybody hurts

The late Luke Robinson (inset) and the Everybody Hurts website

O
ne of the most poignantly compelling road safety campaigns ever staged is currently being showcased in Victoria.
Everybody Hurts explores the tragic ripple effect road trauma has on friends, family, emergency workers and work mates.
The Transport Accident Commission campaign focuses on the aftermath of a car accident in Geelong earlier this year that resulted in the death of 19-year-old Luke Robinson.
The campaign explores the impact that this one crash has had on more than 200 people. It gets behind the statistics we see every day in the media and reveals the profound hurt that everyone feels following a road death.
Take the time to watch some of the personal accounts but, be warned, it's heartbreaking stuff. Visit www.everybodyhurts.com.au

BTS motorsport roundup

Boylan Traffic Solutions managing director Peter Boylan suffered a spot of bad luck recently in his first motor sport outing since breaking his elbow and wrist in February.
Driving a FPV F6 with Geoff Morgan and Rod Barrett in the Dial Before You Dig Australian Six Hour at Eastern Creek Raceway, the team was beset with mechanical troubles, including two blown turbos and a water leak.
"We only managed seven laps, which was a great disappointment," Peter said.
The race was won by Team Mitsubishi Ralliart Australia drivers Warren Luff and Stuart Kostera .

BTS-sponsored driver James Moffat finished sixth in round four of the V8 Supercar Development Series in Townsville recently, despite showing he had the speed to challenge for victory.
The Norton 360 Falcon driver experienced his most competitive round since the Clipsal 500 in March, taking a well deserved second place in race one.
James - the son of BTS Team Safety ambassador Allan Moffat -  looked set to improve on that result as the weekend went on, but an over-ambitious move from Paul Morris ended his race two challenge prematurely.
He then fought back in race three and looked to be set for his first victory of the season, but a spinning back-marker forced him into the wall with only a few laps remaining.
"It just wasn't our weekend this weekend. I came to Townsville with plenty of confidence after winning last year, but unfortunately we got involved in some other people's incidents," James Moffat said.

Allan drops by to chat to West Gate workers

allan
BTS Team Safety ambassador Allan Moffat, OBE, visited workers on Melbourne's West Gate Bridge recently to drive home a very important safety message.
The four-times Australian Touring Car Champion was inspecting an installation of BarrierGuard 800 on the bridge upgrade project when he dropped in to chat to workers on their break.
West Gate Bridge Strengthening Alliance spokeswoman Anne Learmonth said Allan's "spell-binding" safe driving message was drawn from years of experience.
"Allan also signed dozens of posters and hats which were warmly received by all Ford enthusiasts - and even some Holden lovers," she said.
